Tigers 9, White Sox 5 – Castellanos has 5 hits, 5 RBIs in Tigers’ win over White Sox
Nicholas Castellanos had a career-high five hits, including a go-ahead homer in the seventh inning, and drove in five runs as the Detroit Tigers beat the Chicago White Sox 9-5 on Monday night. Castellanos singled in the first, doubled and scored in the fourth, hit an RBI double in the fifth and hit a two-run home run off Jeanmar Gomez (0-1) in the seventh. It was the sixth five-RBI game of his career, including one against the White Sox on June 16. Castellanos came up again in the eighth with the bases loaded and two outs, needing a triple for the cycle, but settled for a two-run single that put the Tigers ahead 9-5. Louis Coleman (4-1) got the win with a scoreless inning of relief. The Tigers are 9-1 against the White Sox this season. Detroit is 3-1 since returning from a winless six-game road trip. Chicago has lost six of seven.

MLB – Baseball with signatures of 11 greats fetches $623,369
A baseball with the signatures of Babe Ruth, Ty Cobb, Honus Wagner and eight other greats of the game has sold for more than $600,000.  The players all signed the ball on the same day in 1939, when they had gathered to become the first class to enter the Baseball Hall of Fame.  SCP Auctions said Monday that it has sold for $623,369. That crushes the previous record of $345,000 for a signed ball, set in 2013.  The winner was identified only as a Southern California collector.  The ball also includes the signatures of Cy Young, Connie Mack and six others. The only original inductee who didn’t sign it was Lou Gehrig, who on that day was headed to a hospital where he’d be diagnosed with ALS.

NBA – Anthony signs one-year deal with Rockets
Carmelo Anthony has signed a one-year, $2.4 million deal with the Houston Rockets. Anthony was traded from the Oklahoma City Thunder to the Atlanta Hawks last month before the Hawks released him. Houston general manager Daryl Morey announced the signing Monday and the Rockets posted a picture on social media of Anthony signing his contract. The 34-year-old joins a team led by MVP James Harden and star point guard Chris Paul. The Rockets hope the addition of Anthony will help them contend for their first title since 1995. They lost to the Golden State Warriors in the Western Conference finals last season.

Golf – PGA – Woods’ charge, Koepka’s win drive strong PGA ratings
The charge by Tiger Woods at the PGA Championship and the two-shot victory by Brooks Koepka drew the highest final-round coverage for the major in nine years. CBS Sports said Monday that Sunday’s round at Bellerive drew a rating of 6.1 and share of 14 _ up 69 percent from last year. The top viewership market was St. Louis (11.5/24), site of the year’s last major. Fort Myers, Florida, was next, followed by Kansas City, Missouri; Tampa/St. Petersburg, Florida; Dayton, Ohio; and West Palm Beach, Florida.  Ratings represent the percentage of all homes with televisions tuned to a program. Shares represent the percentage of all homes with TVs in use at the time. Woods won the most recent of his 14 major championships at the 2008 U.S. Open. The following year, he lost a 54-hole lead in a major for the first time when Y.E. Yang beat him at the PGA Championship.

NCAAFB – Harbaugh doesn’t expect Michigan players to be suspended
Michigan coach Jim Harbaugh says he doesn’t expect any of his players to be suspended for selling shoes. Harbaugh told reporters Monday night all team issued-shoes of current players have been accounted for by the school. Harbaugh says many former players and some former assistant coaches had access to the shoes that have been sold on the secondary market. North Carolina announced last week that 13 football players will miss games while serving suspensions for selling team-issued shoes. The school reported the secondary NCAA violations. Michigan requires its athletes to sign and return forms acknowledging that any sale of team shoes or apparel will jeopardize their eligibility. Michigan’s equipment staff writes names and numbers on shoes given to athletes, who don’t get shoe boxes.

NCAAFB – Fired Ohio State assistant stopped for suspected DUI in 2013
Former Ohio State assistant coach Zach Smith, who was fired last month after a history of domestic violence allegations became public, was arrested for suspected drunken driving in 2013 but pleaded guilty to a lesser charge. Documents obtained by The Blade in Toledo showed that Smith was stopped for speeding in Dublin, north of Columbus, in the early hours of Feb. 23, 2013. He was arrested after failing a field sobriety test and declining to take a blood-alcohol test.  In April 2013, Smith pleaded guilty to an amended charge of failure to control and paid a $375 fine. It’s not clear whether the misdemeanor was reported to the university. Smith’s attorney declined to comment, and Ohio State didn’t immediately respond to messages seeking comment. Smith was fired on July 23. The university is investigating coach Urban Meyer’s handling of the domestic abuse allegations against Smith. Smith has never been criminally charged.

NCAAFB – Police make 2 more arrests in burglary of Scott Frost home
Police have arrested two more people in connection with a burglary at the home of Nebraska football coach Scott Frost. Lincoln police said Monday that a 20-year-old man was taken into custody Saturday and a 16-year-old boy was arrested Wednesday. A 17-year-old girl also was arrested last week. Officer Angela Sands says investigators recovered several pairs of athletic shoes believed to have been stolen. Frost told police on July 29 that burglars entered an unlocked garage door at his house, which is unoccupied while being renovated. Football helmets and artwork were reported missing, along with the athletic shoes. Frost originally reported 14 championship rings from his time at three schools as a player and coach also were taken. The rings were later found in the garage.

NCAAFB – McNair lawyer calls for Maryland coach DJ Durkin to be fired
The attorney for the family of the University of Maryland football player who died after a strenuous offseason workout is calling for Terrapins coach DJ Durkin to be fired. Billy Murphy Jr. says the team failed to properly react after offensive lineman Jordan McNair fell ill on the practice field. The 19-year-old was hospitalized May 29 and died June 13. The attorney said Sunday that the preliminary death certificate showed “symptoms of heatstroke are present.” Durkin was placed on administrative leave Saturday in the wake of reports that he and his staff mistreated players since his arrival at the campus two years ago.

Wrestling – Former WWE star Jim `The Anvil’ Neidhart dies at 63
Jim “The Anvil” Neidhart, who joined with brother-in-law Bret Hart to form one of the top tag teams in the 1980s with the WWE, has died. He was 63. The Pasco Sheriff’s Office said Neidhart fell at home, hit his head and “succumbed to his injury” on Monday in Wesley Chapel, Florida. No foul play was suspected. Neidhart’s daughter, known as Natalya, wrestles for the WWE and is a former women’s champion. Neidhart made appearances with his daughter on the WWE reality series “Total Divas.”
