We now know who will be the Democratic candidates to appear on the November ballot in southwest Michigan’s state legislative districts. Coming out on top in Tuesday’s primaries to run for Michigan House in the 79th District — currently represented by Kim LaSata — was newcomer Joey Andrews. He defeated Marletta Seats for the Democratic nomination. Andrews tells WSJM News he thinks he has a strong shot in November.

“Our message resonated with people here,” Andrews said. “I think ordinary people here are looking for somebody who actually represents them and their values. They’re looking for somebody to give them a break on healthcare, they’re looking for better education for their children, somebody who will protect the environment, stand up for better wages and rights for workers.”

Andrews is an attorney who runs a solar business and also works for a family business in the St. Joseph area. He’ll face Pauline Wendzel for the state House in November. Andrews tells us Marletta Seats has worked hard to accomplish a lot in the community, but in the end, someone had to win. Meanwhile, Ian Haight, who had no primary opponent, will be the Democratic candidate in the 21st Michigan Senate District come November. He’ll go up against Kim LaSata, who defeated Dave Pagel in Tuesday’s Republican state Senate primary.
