Berrien County’s newest park is close to opening to the public. Berrien County Parks Director Brian Bailey tells WSJM News he took some county commissioners on a tour of Paw Paw River County Park in Watervliet this week. That’s after a 90 foot pedestrian bridge was completed late last month to help people reach a 9 acre island in the river.

“We have a parking area that’s going to be wheelchair-accessible to the bridge and on to the island,” Bailey said. “There’s an island on the river, and there’s over 3,000 feet of hard-surfaced trail on the island, and that bridge allows pedestrians to go from the mainland to the island.”

Bailey says the island will feature walking trails, kayak launch areas, fishing locations, and overlook sites on to the Paw Paw River. He’s expecting to hold a grand opening for the brand new park in September.
