Tigers 2, Reds 1 – Boyd throws 8 scoreless innings, Tigers beat Cincinnati 2-1
Matthew Boyd allowed four hits in eight scoreless innings, and Niko Goodrum homered in the fourth to lift the Detroit Tigers over the Cincinnati Reds 2-1 on Tuesday night. Homer Bailey (1-8) retired his first 11 batters before Goodrum went deep for his 10th home run of the year. The Tigers never gave up the lead. Boyd struck out seven and walked one before being lifted after 105 pitches. Shane Greene allowed a run in the ninth but held on for his 22nd save in 25 chances. The game took just 2 hours, 18 minutes. Boyd (6-9) won his second straight start after going seven in a row without a victory. Bailey allowed only a hit and a walk through the first seven innings, but the Tigers added two more hits in the eighth, including an RBI double by Mike Gerber.

Royals 4, White Sox 2 – O’Hearn homers as Royals beat White Sox 4-2
Ryan O’Hearn hit a two-run homer in his major league debut, helping Danny Duffy and the Kansas City Royals beat the Chicago White Sox 4-2 on Tuesday night. Brett Phillips also hit a two-run shot for last-place Kansas City, which had dropped four of five. Duffy (7-9) pitched 5 2/3 scoreless innings, rebounding nicely from a rocky start against Detroit. It was Phillips’ first hit since he was acquired Friday in the trade that sent third baseman Mike Moustakas to Milwaukee.  The White Sox lost for the fifth time in six games. They wasted prime scoring opportunities in the fourth and eighth, and another threat in the sixth was curtailed by a mental mistake by Tim Anderson, prompting manager Rick Renteria to replace the young shortstop.

Pirates 5, Cubs 4 – Pirates cap eventful deadline day with 5-4 win over Cubs
Gregory Polanco hit his team-leading 19th home run, Francisco Cervelli added his 10th of the season and the Pittsburgh Pirates finished off a frantic trade deadline day with a 5-4 victory over the Chicago Cubs on Tuesday night.  Hours after trading for Texas closer Keone Kela and Tampa Bay starting pitcher Chris Archer to give their postseason hopes a jolt, the Pirates won for the 16th time in 20 games by getting to Jon Lester (12-4) in the middle innings and holding on late. Polanco’s solo homer in the eighth gave Pittsburgh a two-run cushion. The Pirates needed it after closer Felipe Vazquez gave up a single to pinch-hitter David Bote leading off the top of the ninth and Addison Russell followed with a shot to the gap in right-center that scored Bote.  Jon Lester hadn’t lost on the road since falling to Cleveland on April 25.

MLB – Trade deadline – Tigers deal Martin, Cubs land Kitzler, Sox stay quiet
The Indians have acquired center fielder Leonys Martin and right-hander Kyle Dowdy from the Tigers for shortstop prospect Willi Castro. The 30-year-old Martin is batting .251 with nine homers and 29 RBIs in 336 plate appearances this season.  The Cubs have landed reliever Brandon Kintzler from the Nationals, exactly a year after the right-hander was moved in another deadline deal. The NL Central-leading Cubs sent minor league pitcher Jhon Romero to Washington.

MLB – Injured Chicago Cubs fan feels `lucky to be alive’
A man who was wearing a plastic bucket on his head when a large metal pin fell from Wrigley Field’s centerfield scoreboard during a Chicago Cubs game, says he feels lucky to be alive. Twenty-year-old Kyle McAleer was sitting with his family and friends under the manual scoreboard when he was hit by a 6- to 8-inch pin during last week’s game against the Arizona Diamondbacks. Cubs officials say the pin rolled out of the scoreboard when a tile was being changed. They say the scoreboard is now secure.

NFL – Lions sign OT Jamar McGloster and release OT Adam Bisnowaty
The Detroit Lions have signed offensive tackle Jamar McGloster and released offensive tackle Adam Bisnowaty. The moves were made Tuesday, the team’s first day off during training camp. San Francisco signed McGloster as an undrafted free agent earlier this year and released him when the 49ers reported for training camp last week. The 6-foot-6, 319-pound McGloster started 24 straight games at Syracuse and played in a total of 30 games. Bisnowaty has one game of NFL experience, a start for the New York Giants last season.

NFL – Newspaper: Indiana city paying $1M for Colts’ hotel rental
Records show that officials in an Indianapolis suburb that’s now home to the Colts’ summer training camp agreed to pay about $1.1 million over three years toward the NFL team’s hotel rental. Contract documents obtained by The Indianapolis Star through a records request show officials in Westfield committed to paying half of the hotel rental bill last year while publicly saying that no city incentives would be used. The team is leasing a 152-room Cambria Suites for roughly 30 days each summer to accommodate players, coaches and staff. Todd Burtron is chief of staff to Mayor Andy Cook. He says the contract isn’t misleading and that technically city funds aren’t being used. He says money from Hamilton County’s tourism bureau will cover the cost.

NFL – Vikings, Diggs agree to 5-year extension
A person with direct knowledge of the deal tells The Associated Press that the Minnesota Vikings and wide receiver Stefon Diggs have agreed to a five-year, $72 million contract extension. Diggs has yet to post a 1,000-yard or 100-catch season, but his ability was on full display when he made the 61-yard touchdown reception on the game’s final play to lift the Vikings to victory over New Orleans in last season’s playoffs.

WNBA – Women’s National Basketball Association
Last Night
Chicago Sky 92, Dallas Wings 91

Sky 92, Wings 91 – Chicago loses 24-point lead, rallies past Dallas 92-91
Allie Quigley scored 22 points, Cheyenne Parker added 20, and the Chicago Sky blew a 24-point lead before rallying past the Dallas Wings 92-91 on Tuesday night.  Courtney Vandersloot had 12 points and 14 assists for Chicago (10-17). The Sky led 55-36 at halftime after shooting 67.9 percent from the field, including making all five 3-pointers. Cambage had 33 points and 13 rebounds for her 12th double-double of the season for Dallas (14-12).  The Wings outscored the Sky by 19 points in the third quarter _ with a 22-4 run.

NCAAFB – New redshirt rule in place for coaches
The NCAA’s new redshirt rule in college football appears to be a smash hit for both players and coaches.  Players will now be allowed to play in up to four games and still qualify for a redshirt season, maintaining four years of eligibility. In the past, playing just one game could cost a player an entire season of eligibility.  Coaches say the change will increase depth, improve development and eliminate many difficult decisions. Baylor coach Matt Rhule, whose team is coming off a 1-11 season, says the new rule is a godsend for the rebuilding Bears. He expects every freshman to play.
