Congressman Fred Upton is hoping to hold hearings on the PFAS contamination found in the water system serving Parchment and Cooper Township in Kalamazoo County. He tells WSJM News making sure such a problem doesn’t happen again — or happen elsewhere — will depend on figuring out how the situation occurred. In the meantime…

“Now that we know Parchment is way above the level, we’ve got to figure out where that source is, how big is that plume, hopefully be able to tap it into the Kalamazoo system itself,” Upton said.

Upton tells us a recent mandate from the governor that all water systems in the state be tested could have helped find the problem in Parchment all the faster. He points to the Flint water crisis, noting he and Congressman Dan Kildee helped to get new EPA mandates approved when addressing it, telling us he expects something similar could happen in response to Parchment.
