MLB – Trade deadline

  • The Red Sox have acquired Ian Kinsler from the Angels to fill in for injured second baseman Dustin Pedroia.  Boston is sending Triple-A pitchers Ty Buttrey and Williams Jerez to Los Angeles, while the Angels are parting with cash in the deal. The 36-year-old Kinsler is batting .239 with 13 homers and 32 RBIs for the Angels this season.
  • The Braves have acquired outfielder Adam Duvall from the Reds for right-handers Lucas Sims and Matt Wisler, along with outfielder Preston Tucker. All three spent time in Atlanta this season but were with Triple-A Gwinnett at the time of the trade. The 29-year-old Duvall has hit 15 home runs with 61 RBIs but is hitting only .205 this season.
  • The Yankees have acquired right-hander Lance Lynn from the Twins for first baseman/outfielder Tyler Austin and right-handed pitching prospect Luis Rijo. The 31-year-old Lynn was 7-8 with a 5.10 ERA in 20 starts for the Twins. He is likely to become a long reliever with the Yankees to replace Adam Warren.
  • The Houston Astros have acquired veteran closer Roberto Osuna from the Toronto Blue Jays for reliever Ken Giles and two pitching prospects. The 23-year-old Osuna is eligible to pitch in the major leagues starting Sunday after a 75-game suspension under Major League Baseball’s domestic violence policy. He was an All-Star last year, when he went 3-4 with 39 saves and a 3.38 ERA.

MLB – Detroit’s Saupold clears waivers, sent to minors
Tigers right-hander Warwick Saupold has cleared waivers and been sent outright to Triple-A Toledo. The Tigers announced the move Monday.  Saupold was designated for assignment Saturday. He is 4-1 with a 4.46 ERA this season. Saupold has made 82 relief appearances for Detroit over the past three seasons, going 8-4 with a 4.98 ERA. The Tigers were off Monday before hosting two games against the Cincinnati Reds.

MLB – Tigers prospect Franklin Perez being shut down for season
Tigers prospect Franklin Perez is being shut down for the rest of the season with right shoulder capsular inflammation. Detroit acquired the right-hander in last year’s trade that sent Justin
Verlander to Houston. Perez also dealt with a right lat strain earlier this year. Perez went 0-1 with a 7.94 ERA in four starts this season for Class A Lakeland, and he was 0-1 with a 4.50 ERA in three starts in the Gulf Coast League. A spokesman for the Tigers said Perez is being shut down for precautionary reasons to work on shoulder stability.

NFL – Lions RB Blount returns to practice day after leaving field
Detroit Lions running back LeGarrette Blount returned to training camp a day after walking off the field during practice.  Blount declined interview requests Monday.  The Lions are counting on the 31-year-old Blount to help improve their running game, which has ranked among the NFL’s worst in recent years. He helped Philadelphia and New England win the past two Super Bowls. Blount ran for 1,927 yards and 20 touchdowns over the previous two seasons. Safety Tavon Wilson attended practice, but was not in pads with his teammates. It was not clear why Wilson was held out of drills. Defensive lineman Da’Shawn Hand left the field with his right knee wrapped in ice. Detroit has its first day off during training camp Tuesday.

NFL – Jets’ Darnold ends holdout
The New York Jets finally have Sam Darnold under contract. The third overall pick in this year’s NFL draft has ended his three-day holdout and signed a four-year, $30.25 million package. Just after signing, Darnold made his way out to the practice field with his teammates greeting him with a “Rudy”-like slow-clap.  Darnold was the second quarterback taken in the draft after playing two seasons at Southern Cal. He completed 65 percent of his 846 passes for 7,279 yards, 57 touchdowns and 22 interceptions. The 21-year-old is expected to compete with McCown and Teddy Bridgewater for the Jets’ starting job. The contract makes Chicago linebacker Roquan Smith the only unsigned player from the April draft.

NFL – Hall of Fame to "honor" absent Owens as part of 2018 class
Despite his decision to not attend Saturday’s Pro Football Hall of Fame induction ceremonies, Terrell Owens will be “honored” by the hall for his NFL career. Hall President David Baker tells The Associated Press on Monday that the Canton, Ohio, shrine’s mission statement begins with the goal “to honor the heroes of the game.”  So Owens, who instead will be making an appearance at the University of Chattanooga, where he played college football, will be part of the 2018 class exhibit that includes a glass locker for each new member; their pictures on the light standards of Tom Benson Hall of Fame Stadium; a role in opening videos shown within the stadium; and mention in any reference to the 2018 class. Baker said NFL Network and ESPN, which both televise the inductions, will show a video of Owens’ career to the audience at home. That video will not be shown in the stadium. “It’s difficult he will not be here to put on the jacket, unveil his bust, make a speech, and attend the parade,” Baker says. “For those things, there’s nothing we can do.”

NBA – Hawks waive Anthony
Carmelo Anthony is a free agent after being waived by the Atlanta Hawks, a move that was expected when the 10-time All-Star was traded from Oklahoma City on July 19.  The 34-year-old Anthony averaged a career-low 16.2 points with the Thunder last season before being acquired by the Hawks for a protected 2022 first-round draft pick from Oklahoma City and Justin Anderson from Philadelphia.  The 10-time All-Star is 22nd on the NBA’s all-time list with 25,417 points.

NCAAFB – Championship rings taken in burglary of Scott Frost’s house
New Nebraska football coach Scott Frost has had an estimated $165,000 in memorabilia taken from his home in Lincoln. Lincoln police told the Lincoln Journal Star on Monday that burglars entered the home through the unlocked garage between Friday at 5:30 p.m. and 6 p.m. Sunday. Capt. Jeri Roeder said two Nebraska championship rings, 10 Oregon championship rings, two Central Florida championship rings, five pairs of Air Jordan shoes and a gaming console are missing. Roeder said Frost and his family don’t live in the home yet because it is under renovation. No arrests have been made.
