After Adduci’s double off Brandon Maurer tied it, Jason Hamel replaced Maurer and gave up a first-pitch RBI double to McCann, his third hit, to put the Tigers ahead.  Maurer (0-4) faced three batters in the ninth and all scored.  Alex Wilson (1-3) picked up the win. Shohei Ohtani hit a solo home run for the Angels, who squandered a 3-1 lead.  Leury Garcia had a go-ahead sacrifice fly with the bases loaded in Chicago’s three-run sixth. Los Angeles starter Jaime Barria (5-7) and reliever Hansel Robles combined to walk three batters and hit another with a pitch during the inning, in addition to allowing an infield single. The White Sox had just two hits during the rally. Abreu hit a solo home run, his 14th of the season, in the first. It was just his second home run this month. The All-Star slugger also tied the game at 3 with a single in the sixth. Giolito (7-8) gave up three runs and five hits in six innings during his first career start against the Angels.

Diamondbacks 7, Cubs 1 – Corbin, Goldschmidt lead Diamondbacks to 7-1 win over Cubs
Paul Goldschmidt homered and Patrick Corbin pitched seven strong innings to pick up his first win in seven weeks, leading Arizona to a 7-1 victory over the Chicago Cubs. A.J. Pollack had two hits and Jeff Mathis added a two-run double as the Diamondbacks won for the fourth time in their last five games at Wrigley Field.   They sent nine batters to the plate while scoring five in the first. Goldschmidt’s homer, his 22nd of the season, made it 6-0 in the second.  After playing five games in four days following the All-Star break, the Cubs turned to Luke Farrell (3-4) for a spot start. MLB – Mets prospect Tebow having hand surgery, likely out for year
Mets minor leaguer Tim Tebow is set for hand surgery Tuesday and likely done for the season, dashing his hopes of playing in the majors this year. The 30-year-old outfielder will have surgery in New York to remove his broken right hamate bone. He hurt himself last week swinging the bat. The former NFL quarterback and Heisman Trophy winner was hitting .273 with six home runs and 36 RBIs in 84 games for Double-A Binghamton. He doubled in the Eastern League All-Star Game this month. Tebow had been considered a candidate for a September call-up by the injury-depleted Mets. The recovery time is six to eight weeks, Mets assistant general manager John Ricco said. “So his season is effectively over,” Ricco said. Tebow had been hitting well lately for the Rumble Ponies during his second full season in the minors. “I view this as nothing but a positive,” Ricco said of Tebow’s progress. “He’s made great strides.” Last year, Tebow hit .226 with eight homers and 52 RBIs in 126 games at two levels of Class A.

NBA – Nowitzki re-signs with Mavs
Dirk Nowitzki is officially signed for a record 21st season with the Dallas Mavericks.  The Mavericks initially declined a team option on Nowitzki’s contract at the start of free agency to create salary cap space for DeAndre Jordan. His $5 million contract is the same amount he would have been guaranteed for 2018-19 under the old contract. The 40-year-old Nowitzki is set to become the first player in NBA history to play 21 consecutive seasons with the same team. He’s also one of six players to score more than 30,000 career points.

NBA – Bulls claim G Cleveland off waivers from Atlanta
The Chicago Bulls have claimed guard Antonius Cleveland off waivers from the Atlanta Hawks. Cleveland played in 13 games for the Dallas Mavericks last season and four for the Hawks. Atlanta waived him on Saturday and Chicago claimed him on Monday. He played four years at Southeast Missouri State, averaging 12.9 points and 4.7 rebounds.

NFL – Vikings offensive line coach Sparano died of heart disease
A county medical examiner says Minnesota Vikings offensive line coach Tony Sparano died of heart disease. The Hennepin County medical examiner’s office said Monday that the 56-year-old Sparano died of arteriosclerotic heart disease, or hardening of the arteries. The manner of death is listed as natural. Sparano died Sunday in Eden Prairie, a Minneapolis suburb. He had been the Vikings’ offensive line coach since 2016. Sparano began his NFL coaching career in 1999 and had stints as a head coach with the Miami Dolphins and Oakland Raiders. He was the Dolphins’ head coach from 2008-11 and went 29-32. He went 11-5 and won the AFC East in his first season with Miami. Sparano also spent time with the Browns, Redskins, Jaguars, Cowboys and 49ers.

Golf – PGA – Merritt wins rain-delayed Barbasol
Troy Merritt shot a 5-under 67 to win the rain-delayed Barbasol Championship by one stroke over Billy Horschel, Richy Werenski and Tom Lovelady.  Merritt’s second career PGA Tour victory earns him a spot in next month’s PGA Championship. Merritt led or shared the lead after each round. Consecutive birdies on Nos. 14 and 15 at the Champions Trace at Keene Trace Golf Club put him into the lead before he finished with a series of pars for a 23-under 265.

NCAAFB – OSU fires receivers coach after domestic charge
Ohio State has fired receivers coach Zach Smith, who was charged last week with misdemeanor criminal trespass after a dispute with his ex-wife. Coach Urban Meyer announced Smith’s dismissal in a two-sentence statement on Monday. The move came after multiple media outlets reported that Smith’s ex-wife has filed for a protective order against him. The Columbus Dispatch reported that Courtney Smith wrote in a sworn document that her ex-husband has stalked and intimidated her. At the time of the trespass charge, Zach Smith’s attorney said Smith’s ex-wife accused him of driving to her apartment after she told him they would meet elsewhere so he could drop off their son. Meyer was scheduled to speak to reporters at Big Ten Media Days on Tuesday. According to his statement, “coaching staff adjustments will be announced at a later date.”

Swimming – Lochte suspended
Swimmer Ryan Lochte has been suspended until next July by the U.S. Anti-Doping Agency for getting an intravenous infusion, a method that broke anti-doping rules. U.S. officials say the 12-time Olympic medalist was not using a banned substance. But under anti-doping rules, athletes typically cannot receive IVs unless related to a hospitalization or through an exemption. Lochte posted a photo of himself getting the IV in May and that image prompted the investigation.  It’s his second suspension since the Rio Olympics. He was banned for 10 months after claiming he and three other U.S. swimmers were robbed at gunpoint at those 2016 Games, a tale that quickly unraveled.
