More Michigan residents than ever before are part of the state’s Organ Donor Registry. It’s run by the Secretary of State’s office, and spokesman Fred Woodhams tells WSJM News the registry has gone over five-million people.

“The number was at about 27% of Michigan residents, and it’s now at 34%,” Woodhams said.

That 27% number was when Secretary of State Ruth Johnson took office in 2011. She has made getting more people registered to be donors a top priority of her two terms. Health officials say every donor can potentially save as many as eight lives through organ donation, and improve the lives of 75 others through cornea and tissue donation.
