Starting Monday, kids 18 and under will still be able to get nutritious meals this summer with school being out. The Boys & Girls Club of Benton Harbor is continuing its Summer Food Service Program for all students in Benton Harbor and surrounding communities. Spokeswoman Sherri Ulleg talked to WSJM News about the point of the program.
“One, to provide a healthy, well-balanced meal for kids up to the age of 18, and also to encourage kids to participate in the available programming at the different sites,” said Ulleg. “During the summer, any child up to the age of 18 can eat for free at the club or one of our locations.”
Ulleg says nationally, there are 22 million kids who receive free or reduced cost meals in schools, and in the summer, just one in six have access to food. The Boys & Girls Club of Benton Harbor is working with the U.S. Department of Agriculture and the Michigan Department of Education to provide the meals.
