Tigers 5, Twins 2 – Reyes keys 4-run rally in 8th, Tigers beat Twins 5-2
Victor Reyes’s RBI single keyed a four-run eighth inning and the Detroit Tigers rallied to beat the Minnesota Twins 5-2 on Wednesday night. The Tigers won for just the fourth time in 11 games. Leading 2-1 after seven, the Twins failed to add an insurance run in the eighth, stranding Eduardo Escobar after a one-out triple, and it came back to haunt them. With one out in the bottom of the inning, John Hicks, Niko Goodrum and Grayson Greiner hit consecutive singles off Addison Reed (1-5) to tie the game. Jose Iglesias popped out, but Reyes grounded an RBI single to left. Leonys Martin followed with an RBI single and Reyes scored on right fielder Robbie Grossman’s throwing error to make it 5-2. Joe Jimenez (3-0) got the win with a scoreless eighth. Shane Greene pitched the ninth for his 16th save.

White Sox 3, Indians 2 – Covey pitches White Sox past Bauer, Indians 3-2
Dylan Covey carried a shutout into the eighth inning, continuing his impressive June and helping the Chicago White Sox beat Trevor Bauer and the Cleveland Indians 3-2 on Wednesday night. Covey (3-1) allowed 10 hits _ all singles _ and walked none. The 26-year-old right-hander, who was acquired from Oakland in the 2016 Rule 5 draft, improved to 3-0 with a 1.53 ERA in five starts since he was recalled from Triple-A Charlotte last month. Covey got a warm ovation from the crowd of 19,390 when he departed after the first two batters reached in the eighth. Edwin Encarnacion hit a one-out RBI single and Yonder Alonso doubled home another run before Jace Fry struck out Melky Cabrera and Jason Kipnis, preserving Chicago’s 3-2 lead. Joakim Soria allowed two more hits in the ninth before finishing for his 10th save in 12 chances. Michael Brantley bounced into a game-ending double play with runners on first and second.

Brewers 1, Cubs 0 – Cain, Chacin pace Brewers past Cubs 1-0
Lorenzo Cain homered and Jhoulys Chacin combined with three relievers on a six-hitter to give the Milwaukee Brewers their second straight shutout of the Chicago Cubs, 1-0 on Wednesday. Chacin (6-1) allowed four hits in six innings, striking out seven and walking four to win his sixth consecutive decision. Jeremy Jeffress pitched the seventh, Josh Hader struck out the side in the eighth and Cory Knebel finished with a perfect ninth for his sixth save. Mike Montgomery (2-2) allowed only two hits in six innings, both by Cain. He struck out four and walked one in his fourth start since replacing injured Yu Darvish in the rotation. The Brewers improved to 3-8 this season against the Cubs and moved 1 ½ games ahead of second-place Chicago in the N.L. Central.

MLB – White Sox place RHP Jones on 10-day DL with forearm injury
The Chicago White Sox have placed right-hander Nate Jones on the 10-day disabled list with a muscle strain in his forearm. Manager Rick Renteria says Jones told the team about the issue after he faced three batters during Tuesday night’s 5-1 victory over Cleveland, allowing a hit, a walk and recording one out. The veteran reliever got an MRI, and Renteria says the injury is “very mild.” Jones is 2-2 with a 4.01 ERA and four saves in 27 appearances this year. Renteria says he will stop throwing for six days and then be re-evaluated. Chicago also recalled right-hander Juan Minaya from Triple-A Charlotte before Wednesday night’s game against the Indians. Minaya has no record and a 10.80 ERA in five appearances with the White Sox this year.

FIFA – North American trio beats Morocco to host 2026 World Cup
North America will host the 2026 World Cup after FIFA voters overwhelmingly opted for the financial and logistical certainty of a United States-led bid over a risky Moroccan proposal for the first 48-team tournament. The soccer showpiece will return to the U.S. for the first time since 1994 after gaining 134 votes, while Morocco got 65 votes at the FIFA Congress in Moscow on Wednesday. The vote by football federations was public, in contrast to secrecy surrounding the ballot by FIFA’s elected board members for the 2018 and 2022 hosts, Russia and Qatar, in 2010. North America is optimistically promising to deliver $14 billion in revenue, while the tournament won’t require major construction work required on the 16 planned stadiums, all of which already exist.

Interim Michigan State president disparaged lawyers, victim in email
Emails show the interim president of Michigan State University criticized lawyers who represent Larry Nassar’s assault victims and said a former gymnast probably was getting a “kickback” from her attorney. John Engler’s remarks were made to a university lawyer in April, a month before Michigan State agreed to a $500 million settlement with hundreds of women and girls who said they were assaulted by Nassar, a sports doctor. The Chronicle of Higher Education and Detroit Free Press reported on the emails Wednesday. Engler said he thought victims were “being manipulated by trial lawyers” and that lawyers would get “millions of dollars more” than their clients. Engler said he thought Rachael Denhollander was likely getting a kickback from her lawyer. She has been outspoken and in 2016 was the first to publicly say she was a Nassar victim.    Denhollander says Engler’s comments reflect a “culture of abuse.”

Maryland executive athletic director Damon Evans said Jordan McNair was hospitalized May 29 and died Wednesday. He was 19. McNair was a 6-foot-4, 325-pound offensive lineman preparing for his sophomore season. A graduate of McDonogh High School, McNair played one game last season.

NCAA – NCAA eases rules on athlete transfers
College athletes will no longer need permission from their coach or school to transfer and receive financial aid from another school. The NCAA Division I Council approved the change Wednesday. It takes effect Oct. 15. The long-awaited transfer reform ended up being a narrow change, but should provide more freedom for athletes to transfer when and where they want. Under the new rule, athletes would be permitted to be contacted when they notify their current coaches, who have two days to enter the names into a database created and managed by the NCAA that will alert schools who can be recruited. The change will come with stricter tampering rules to help appease coaches who worry illegal recruiting could rise.

Unions seek player safeguards as sports gambling expands
Unions representing professional athletes are starting to lobby states that are considering legal sports gambling, seeking protection for athletes from threats and harassment and from those who might seek to manipulate their performance on the field for monetary gain.  In a document being circulated to state and federal lawmakers and obtained by The Associated Press, attorneys for five players’ unions are urging states to approve laws and regulations that protect players who report contact with people seeking to influence games. The unions are also asking that athletes, officials and members of their families be protected “from physical attacks, verbal threats, or other forms of harassment occurring in the workplace or elsewhere.” The Supreme Court last month struck down a federal law that limited full-fledged sports books to Nevada, and states are scrambling to legalize gambling to boost their casinos or lotteries. Sports books opened last week in Delaware, and New Jersey will follow suit on Thursday.
