Blue Jays 8, Tigers 4 – Smoak, Sanchez help Blue Jays beat Tigers, 8-4
Justin Smoak had three hits, including a homer, and drove in three runs to help the Blue Jays end a five-game losing streak with an 8-4 victory over the Detroit Tigers on Sunday.  Aaron Sanchez (3-5) pitched six innings and ended a five-start winless streak, giving up one run on two hits and three walks while striking out seven. Michael Fulmer (2-5) allowed four runs on five hits and three walks in six-plus innings, striking out three. Fulmer has a 6.89 ERA in his past six starts.  Sanchez and Fulmer kept the game scoreless through five innings. Fulmer walked Yangervis Solante with two outs in the sixth, and Smoak hit a 3-2 fastball over the scoreboard in right-centerfield to give the Blue Jays a 2-0 lead. Fulmer gave up a single and a walk to start the seventh, and was replaced by Warwick Saupold.

White Sox 6, Brewers 1 – Palka, Engel hit back-back HRs as White Sox beat Brewers 6-1
Daniel Palka and Adam Engel hit back-to-back homers in a three-run sixth inning, and the Chicago White Sox beat Milwaukee 6-1 on Sunday.  The NL Central-leading Brewers dropped two of three against the team with the second-worst record in the majors after winning six straight series following a two-game split with Cleveland last month. They are also 4-14 in their past 18 games against Chicago. The game was tied 1-1 with one out when Palka — batting for Jose Rondon — hit a long two-run homer to right against Matt Albers.  Engel made it 4-1 two pitches later with a drive off the top of the center-field wall, just beyond a leaping Lorenzo Cain. Jose Abreu and Engel each had RBI doubles in the eighth, and the White Sox came away with the win after dropping five of six.  Chicago’s Dylan Covey and Milwaukee’s Brent Suter (5-4) each went five-plus innings. Covey gave up one unearned run and four hits. He struck out seven and walked three before Domingo Santana chased him with a leadoff single in the sixth.  Chris Volstad (1-3) came in and catcher Alfredo Gonzalez threw out Villar trying to steal second with Manny Pina batting. Joakim Soria, Jace Fry and Chris Beck each worked a scoreless inning.

Cubs 2, Mets 0 – Baez, Lester lead Cubs over Mets 2-0 for 4-game sweep
Jon Lester dominated for seven innings and Javier Baez stole home to break a scoreless tie as Chicago blanked the New York Mets 2-0, completing a four-game sweep and winning for the seventh time in eight games.  The Mets have lost four straight and nine of 11, dropping three games under .500 for the first time this season. They scored just six runs in this series.  The two clubs were back at it on Sunday following a rainy, 14-inning marathon that took almost five hours to complete the night before.  On an unseasonably cool afternoon, both starting pitchers matched zeroes until the seventh, when the Cubs scored twice thanks to some very aggressive baserunning.  Baez and Willson Contreras led off with back-to-back singles, putting runners at the corners. With Ian Happ at the plate, Chicago pulled off a daring double steal. Mets starter Steven Matz (2-4) was unaware that Baez was breaking for the plate, stepping off and throwing to first baseman Adrian Gonzalez in an attempt to pick off Contreras instead. Lester allowed just two hits, walking three and striking out seven.  Brian Duensing pitched a scoreless ninth for his first save.

Cleveland was within 90-80 lead until Curry hit five treys while the Warriors outscored the Cavs 32-23 in the final period.  Kevin Durant had 26 points on 10 of 14 shooting. He also contributed 10 rebounds and seven assists, while handling a load of the defensive assignment against LeBron James.  Klay Thompson delivered 20 points after being questionable for the game because of a sprained ankle suffered during the series opener. NFL – Packers’ Matthews needs nasal surgery
Green Bay Packers linebacker Clay Matthews says he needs surgery on his nose after getting hit in the face with a line drive during a charity softball game on Saturday. Matthews was pitching when offensive lineman Lucas Patrick hit the ball directly into Matthews’ face, knocking him to the ground. The Green Bay Press Gazette reports that Matthews got up, covered his face with his glove, then walked to the dugout. He did not return to the game.

NASCAR – Truex wins at Pocono
Martin Truex Jr. pulled away off a restart with seven laps remaining to take Sunday’s NASCAR Cup race at Pocono Raceway. Truex led 31 overall and the final 20 to celebrate at the same track where he won his first race for Furniture Row Racing in 2015. The victory follows two straight runner-up finishes. Kyle Larson was second, followed by Kyle Busch, Kevin Harvick and Brad Keselowski. Pole-sitter Ryan Blaney was sixth.

IndyCar – Hunter-Reay races to 1st IndyCar win since 2015
Ryan Hunter-Reay won his first IndyCar race since 2015, prevailing at Belle Isle after teammate Alexander Rossi slid off the track at a turn with about seven laps to go.  Rossi, the pole winner, was struggling to hold off Hunter-Reay before the mishap at a right turn on lap 64 of 70. From there, it was smooth sailing for Hunter-Reay on the 2.35-mile street course. He finished more than 11 seconds ahead of second-place Will Power.  Ed Jones finished third, followed by Scott Dixon. Rossi fell to 12th and dropped out of the series points lead.  Power, the Indianapolis 500 champion, returned to the top of the season standings. He’d fallen to third place after Saturday’s race, in which Dixon outlasted Hunter-Reay for the win. Hunter-Reay won the weekend’s second IndyCar race for his 17th career win. It was the 59th for Andretti Autosport. The race Sunday was delayed over a half-hour because the pace car crashed during a pace lap.

Tennis – French Open – Djokovic back in French quarters

Djokovic will make his 12th career trip to the round of eight in Paris, a record for the 50-year professional era. Djokovic advanced to his 40th Grand Slam quarterfinal. Rafael Nadal can pull even with a 12th French Open quarterfinal, too, by winning on Monday.

Golf – PGA – DeChambeau wins Memorial in playoff
Bryson DeChambeau recovered in time to win the Memorial in a three-way playoff with Byeong Hun An and Kyle Stanley. DeChambeau created the need for a playoff with a three-putt for bogey on 18 to cap a 1-under 71. He missed the green on 18 during the first extra hole, but he sank a 12-foot birdie on the second to edge out An and capture his second PGA Tour title.  Stanley was eliminated with a bogey on the first playoff hole. Tiger Woods shot a 72 to end up in a tie for 23rd.

Golf – PGA – Jutanugarn celebrates after wasting huge lead
Ariya Jutanugarn coughed up a seven-stroke lead before capturing the U.S. Women’s Open on the fourth hole of a playoff at Shoal Creek.  The 22-year-old from Thailand made a clutch bunker shot to within a foot of the hole to save par, beating South Korea’s Hyo-Joo Kim. Jutanugarn capped her final-round 73 with consecutive bogeys before beating Kim, who fired a 67.

Michigan trails decide whether to welcome electric bikes
Many Michigan residents are questioning whether electric bicycles should be allowed on woodland trails and urban bikeways as the motorized two-wheelers gain popularity.  A new state law says trail managers and oversight boards can either allow electric bikes to glide alongside regular hikers and bikers or they can hold public hearings to vote on the issue.  Oakland County held meetings in April over whether electric bicycles should be permitted in the Paint Creek Trial, the Detroit Free Press reported. Residents opposing the electric bikes argued that they were too speedy and incompatible with walkers and joggers on the path.  The county board voted after the debate to allow the types of electric bikes that only work when a rider is pedaling or roll with continuous e-power. The board banned electric bikes with a higher top speed of 28 mph.  Gregory Krzeminski sells electric bikes at his shop in Harrison Township. "I like that Paint Creek is setting the precedent for a lot of other trails," he said.  Only Class 1 electric bicycles, which require the rider to pedal, are allowed on Detroit’s bikeways, according to the Detroit Greenways Coalition website.
