Tigers 6, Angels 2 – Reyes’ 3-run triple helps Tigers beat Angels 6-2
Victor Reyes hit a three-run triple in the five-run first to help the Detroit Tigers beat the Los Angeles Angles 6-2 on Thursday. Detroit starter Ryan Carpenter was on pace to pick up his first career victory, but left the game after four innings with an oblique strain.  Warwick Saupold (3-1) replaced Carpenter and pitched two perfect innings. Carpenter gave up one run and five hits. Andrew Heaney (2-4) allowed five runs and eight hits over five innings. He had given up a total of six runs over his previous six starts. The Tigers set themselves up to win the four-game series by roughing up Heaney in the first inning. Jeimer Candelario hit an RBI double, John Hicks drove in a run with a single and Reyes’ triple later cleared the bases to make it 5-0. Reyes finished with three hits. Detroit’s Ronny Rodriguez had two hits and scored a run in his major league debut.

Cubs 5, Mets 1 – Quintana, Zobrist lead Cubs to 5-1 win over banged-up Mets
Jose Quintana pitched six shutout innings, Ben Zobrist hit a two-run homer and the Chicago Cubs beat the banged-up New York Mets 5-1 on Thursday night in the opener of a four-game series. Zobrist also doubled and singled in the leadoff spot as the Cubs won for the fourth time in five games. Chicago improved to 2-8 at Citi Field since the 2015 NL Championship Series. Quintana (6-4)  allowed three hits and escaped a bases-loaded jam in the third when he threw a called third strike past Jose Bautista and retired cleanup man Michael Conforto on a grounder.  Quintana struck out six and walked two on a foggy, misty night in Queens. Brandon Morrow, the fourth Chicago reliever, needed only two pitches to earn his 13th save. With two runners aboard, he retired Amed Rosario on a grounder to finish the four-hitter. Brandon Nimmo hit his career-high sixth home run in the eighth for the Mets, off Brian Duensing.

NBA – 2018 NBA Finals – (Best of 7)
Last Night
Golden State Warriors 124, Cleveland Cavaliers 114 – OT          GSW leads 1-0

Warriors 124, Cavaliers 114 – OT – Warriors withstand James’ 51 points to win NBA Finals Game 1
Stephen Curry scored 29 points and the Golden State Warriors capitalized on a Cavaliers blunder that sent the game into overtime, withstanding a brilliant 51-point performance by LeBron James to beat Cleveland 124-114 in Game 1 of the NBA Finals on Thursday night. The game nearly over, James jawed with both Curry and Klay Thompson, then Tristan Thompson and Draymond Green tangled moments later and made contact. After replay review, Tristan Thompson received a Flagrant 2 foul and ejection with 2.6 seconds left.  James was in utter disbelief as regulation ended in stunning fashion: George Hill made the first of two free throws with 4.7 seconds left after being fouled by Klay Thompson, then J.R. Smith secured the rebound and dribbled back toward halfcourt, apparently thinking the Cavs had a lead.  Instead, OT. Game 2 is Sunday night back at Oracle Arena.

NBA – Replay overturn plays key role in Warriors’ Game 1 win
Block or charge? One of the most difficult calls to make in the split second of fast-paced NBA action helped swing Game 1 of the NBA Finals in Golden State’s favor. Officials went to a replay review because they weren’t sure if LeBron James’ feet were outside the restricted area when Kevin Durant slammed into him in the final minute of regulation in a game Cleveland lost 124-114 in overtime Thursday night. Referees overturned their initial call after the review and called a foul on James. Durant made two free throws to tie the game with about 30 seconds remaining.  The overturn angered the Cavaliers, who were upset the call even went to review because they felt James was clearly outside the restricted area.

NHL – 2018 Stanley Cup Final – (Best of 7)
Saturday
Vegas Golden Knights at Washington Capitals, 8:00 p.m.             Series tied 1-1

NHL – Kuznetsov’s status for Game 3 of Stanley Cup Final unclear
Washington Capitals coach Barry Trotz had no update Thursday on injured center Evgeny Kuznetsov or his status for Game 3 of the Stanley Cup Final against the Vegas Golden Knights. Kuznetsov missed the last two periods of Wednesday night’s 3-2 win at Vegas after taking a hit from defenseman Brayden McNabb. The Capitals are calling it an upper-body injury, but he was clutching his left arm as he headed to the dressing room.

NHL/AHL – Dallas Stars add Todd Nelson as 1st assistant for new coach
New Dallas Stars coach Jim Montgomery has added his first new assistant.  Todd Nelson, who spent the last three seasons as head coach for Grand Rapids in the American Hockey League, was named a Stars assistant coach on Thursday. It is his third job with an NHL team, including a 46-game stint as Edmonton’s head coach in 2014-15 when the Oilers went 17-22-7 before he went to the AHL’s Griffins. Nelson led Grand Rapids to a 133-78-17 record with three consecutive playoff appearances and the 2017 Calder Cup championship.  His was assistant with the NHL’s Atlanta Thrashers from 2008-10. He was then head coach of the AHL’s Oklahoma City Barons, going 176-111-46 from 2010-15 with playoff appearances each season before his time with the Oilers.

Tennis – French Open – Serena Williams, Rafael Nadal among Day 5 winners
Serena Williams has advanced to the third round at the French Open by overcoming some early difficulties to beat 17th-seeded Ashleigh Barty of Australia 3-6, 6-3, 6-4. Two-time champion Maria Sharapova improved to 13-0 in second-round matches at the French Open by beating 50th-ranked Donna Vekic of Croatia 7-5, 6-4. Rafael Nadal completed another straight-set win to reach the third round, easily dispatching Guido Pella of Argentina 6-2, 6-1, 6-1.

Golf – PGA – Matsuyama has share of Memorial lead.
Hideki Matsuyama holed out from 130 yards for an eagle on 17 before completing a 7-under 65 that gives him a share of the lead at the Memorial. Matsuyama was in the middle of the pack until he made four straight birdies starting on the 13th hole, and then made his eagle on the 17th hole. Joaquin Niemann and Abraham Ancer also share the lead, one shot ahead of Beau Hossler. Tiger Woods had a strong finish with three straight birdies late in his round, but all that did was get him back to even par.

Golf – LPGA – Co-leaders at US Women’s Open
Three players share the lead through one round of the US Women’s Open at Shoal Creek in Birmingham.  Ariya Jutanugarn, Sarah Jane Smith and Jeongeun6 Lee each opened with 5-under 67s for a two-shot edge over Michelle Wie, Danielle Kang and amateur Linn Grant. Jutanugarn and Smith each had an eagle, five birdies and two bogeys.

MWL – Foul ball strikes girl in head at Midwest League baseball game
A mid-Michigan girl attending a minor league baseball game has been hospitalized after being hit in the head by an errant ball. WNEM-TV and MLive.com report the girl was attending a Great Lakes Loons game Wednesday at Midland’s Dow Diamond. She was sitting in a grassy area of the right field berm when she was hit by the foul ball. Dow Diamond Chief Operating Officer Scott Litle says the girl first was treated by emergency medical technicians, who then took her to a hospital. Her condition isn’t known. Authorities have not released her name or age. Midland Police Lt. Michael Sokol told The Associated Press Thursday that he has no information about the girl or her injuries.  Many students attended the game as part of a School Kids Day promotion.
