Cleveland Indians 7, Chicago White Sox 3
Chicago Cubs 8, Pittsburgh Pirates 6

Angels 9, Tigers 2 – Kinsler, Valbuena, Maldonado homer and Angels top Tigers 9-2
Former Tiger Ian Kinsler hit a three-run homer in the second inning as part of a 3-for-3 performance to help the Los Angeles Angels beat the Detroit Tigers 9-2 Tuesday night. He entered the game on a 2-for-27 slump during the current road trip. After the victory, he raised his batting average to .195 with about one-third of the season finished.  Luis Valbuena homered twice and Martin Maldonado added a two-run homer in the eighth inning for Los Angeles.  Nick Tropeano (3-3) made the most of Los Angeles’ offensive display, allowing two runs and seven hits in 5 1/3 innings. Michael Fulmer (2-4) was tagged for five runs and six hits in 3 1/3 innings with four walks. JaCoby Jones homered for the Tigers in the fifth, and Jeimer Candelario connected in the sixth.

Indians 7, White Sox 3 – Brantley, Ramirez, Kipnis homer, Indians beat White Sox 7-3
each hit a solo home run, and the Cleveland Indians beat the Chicago White Sox 7-3 on Tuesday night. Brantley was 3 for 4 and extended his hitting streak to 18 games, the longest active streak in the majors. He homered in the third and had an RBI single in the seventh. Ramirez hit his team-leading 16th home run in the fifth and drove in a run with a first-inning double. Kipnis homered in the eighth for Cleveland, which has won four straight and is 12-5 against the AL Central. Mike Clevinger (4-2) allowed one run in 6 2/3 innings. The right-hander struck out seven and allowed four hits. Chicago has lost five of six and has the worst record in the majors (16-36). Lucas Giolito (3-6) allowed five runs in six innings.

Cubs 8, Pirates 6 – Rizzo shakes off boos to spark rally, Cubs top Pirates 8-6
Anthony Rizzo shook off the boos and sparked a late rally with his ninth home run of the season as the Chicago Cubs held off the reeling Pittsburgh Pirates 8-6 on Tuesday night. A day after his aggressive slide at home plate that took out Pittsburgh catcher Elias Diaz drew a rebuke from Major League Baseball, Rizzo doubled in the first inning and sent a solo shot off Edgar Santana (2-1) just over the railing of the Clemente Wall in right field to knot the game at 4. The Cubs then piled on against Pittsburgh’s sagging bullpen to hand the Pirates their ninth loss in 11 games. Chicago scored five times against Pittsburgh relievers, including Ian Happ’s go-ahead double two batters after Rizzo tied it and Kyle Schwarber’s two-run homer off the right-field foul pole in the eighth. Jon Lester (5-2) lacked his usual crispness, allowing four runs in six innings, but picked up the second multihit game of his 13-year career by going 2 for 3, including an RBI single in the sixth that drew the Cubs within a run. Jason Heyward went 3 for 5 with an RBI for Chicago.

MLB – 2-way star Ohtani to pitch for Angels vs Tigers on Wednesday
Shohei Ohtani will make his next start on the mound for the Los Angeles Angels on Wednesday night against Detroit.  Angels manager Mike Scioscia made the announcement Tuesday. The two-way rookie from Japan has not pitched since May 20. He was on track to start at Yankee Stadium on Sunday, but the Angels changed that plan as part of his workload management. The 23-year-old Ohtani is 4-1 with a 3.35 ERA. He is hitting .291 with six homers and 20 RBIs. Ohtani insists he didn’t enter the season with expectations about how productive he could be, adding he simply wanted to stay healthy.

NHL – 2018 Stanley Cup Finals – (Best of 7)

NHL – Knights, Caps try to keep their cool in Vegas at Cup Final
The Vegas Golden Knights still think Tom Wilson’s third-period hit on Jonathan Marchessault was very late and probably dirty. They also believe it sparked their comeback victory in the Stanley Cup Final opener. Wilson and the Washington Capitals still insist he did nothing wrong when he leveled the Golden Knights’ top playoff scorer. The NHL agreed with Wilson on Tuesday, declining to discipline the hard-charging forward. But after the collision and the resulting scrums, Vegas coach Gerard Gallant saw a renewed vigor in his Knights. They quickly got Tomas Nosek’s go-ahead goal and surged one game closer to an improbable championship. Game 2 is Wednesday night on the Strip. Both teams intend to channel their nervous energy more constructively after an entertainingly ramshackle opener.

NBA – Warriors await word on top defender Iguodala as LeBron looms
The Golden State Warriors could be without one of their top defenders when they open the NBA Finals against LeBron James and the Cleveland Cavaliers. Andre Iguodala’s status for Game 1 on Thursday night is a question as he recovers from a bone bruise in his left knee. Iguodala missed the final four games of the Western Conference finals against Houston, the latest bit of uncertainty plaguing the defending champions this postseason.  Golden State coach Steve Kerr says the 2015 Finals MVP will return once he can run without pain. The Warriors could use him against King James, who is making his eighth straight Finals appearance and fourth consecutive against the Warriors.  Cleveland’s Kevin Love is in the concussion protocol and may not be ready for Game 1.

NCAAMBB – Nick Ward to return to Michigan State for junior season
Michigan State forward Nick Ward is withdrawing his name from the NBA draft and returning to school for his junior season. Ward says Tuesday the workouts and interviews with NBA teams will help him when he’s ready to take the next step. The 6-foot-8, 245-pound Ward averaged 12.4 points and a team-best 7.1 rebounds last season. He will be a key player for the Spartans next season. They will be without Jaren Jackson and Miles Bridges, underclassmen who declared for the draft and are expected to be among the top selections. Michigan State coach Tom Izzo says the process provided Ward with a great opportunity to explore his draft stock and find out what he has to work on to play in the NBA.

NFL – Court to consider fraud investigator in NFL concussion case
A federal judge in Philadelphia is scheduled to hear arguments in the NFL’s request for a special investigator to look into what the league says are fraudulent claims in a $1 billion concussion settlement. The league last month cited an independent study it said found that more than 400 claims had been recommended for denial based on evidence of fraud by attorneys, doctors and former players. Plaintiffs’ lawyers contend the league is not awarding settlement funds fast enough. So far, $227 million in claims have been awarded. The league says attempts to scam the system are responsible for delays. The NFL has asked that the investigator be granted subpoena power. League officials say a special investigator would help ensure the integrity of the settlement. Arguments are scheduled for Wednesday.

Tennis – French Open – Serena wins first match as mom
Serena Williams has won her first Grand Slam match as a mother, and first match at a major in 16 months. Williams beat 70th-ranked Kristyna Pliskova of the Czech Republic 7-6 (4), 6-4
to reach the second round of the French Open.  The 36-year-old American had not competed at a Grand Slam tournament since the Australian Open in January 2017, when she was pregnant and won her 23rd major championship. Williams gave birth to a daughter last September.
