Tigers 4, Twins 1 – Fulmer, Goodum help Tigers top Twins 4-1, stop 5-game skid
Michael Fulmer won for the first time in four starts, Niko Goodrum ended an 0-for-14 skid with a home run and the Detroit Tigers stopped a five-game losing streak with a 4-1 win over the Minnesota Twins on Wednesday. Brain Dozier led off the bottom of the first with a drive to deep center that missed a home run by a few inches. The ball stuck in a seam between two pads near the top of the 8-foot wall in center, and Dozier was given a double. Fulmer (2-3) allowed one run and four hits in 5 2/3 innings with five strikeouts, improving to 4-0 against Minnesota as he threw a season-high 112 pitches. He had lost his previous three starts, allowing 14 earned runs in 16 1/3 innings. Shane Greene pitched a 1-2-3 ninth for his 11th save in 14 chances, completing a five-hitter.  Goodrum, Nicholas Castellanos and Victor Martinez had two hits each for the Tigers.

White Sox 11, Orioles 1 – Covey earns 1st win, White Sox hit 3 homers in rout of O’s
Dylan Covey tossed seven strong innings for his first major league win, Yoan Moncada and Adam Engel each hit three-run homers and the Chicago White Sox pounded the Baltimore Orioles 11-1 on Wednesday night. Jose Rondon added his first major league homer, a two-run shot in the seventh, as last-place Chicago rolled to its fifth win in seven games. Covey (1-1) allowed one run on six hits and struck out eight in his 20th game and 14th start _ and longest outing _ in the majors. Baltimore, last in the AL East, has lost four of five overall and is 5-21 on the road. Moncada’s shot to center in a four-run third inning put the White Sox ahead for good after Jace Peterson singled in Baltimore’s lone run in the second. Moncada’s seventh homer was his first since April 26, a stretch that included time on the disabled list with left hamstring tightness. Engel, who entered hitting .183, added three singles and matched a career high with four hits. His drive to left in the fifth was his first homer since last September.

Indians 1, Cubs 0 – Plutko, Miller pitch Indians past Cubs 1-0
Adam Plutko carried a no-hitter into the seventh inning and Andrew Miller provided stellar relief work, helping the Cleveland Indians beat the Chicago Cubs 1-0 on Wednesday night. Plutko (2-0) struck out four and walked four in his second major league start. The right-hander was promoted from Triple-A Columbus to replace the struggling Josh Tomlin in Cleveland’s rotation. The Indians completed a sweep of their two-game set versus the Cubs in their first appearance at Wrigley Field since they lost the 2016 World Series. Chicago wasted a terrific start by Jon Lester (4-2) in its second straight loss after taking three of four last weekend in Cincinnati. The lefty allowed six hits, struck out four and walked one while lowering his ERA to 2.37 in his 10th start this year.

Capitals 4, Lightning 0 – Ovechkin, Holtby shine in Game 7, Caps beat Lightning 4-0
Alex Ovechkin scored early and Andre Burakovsky added two second-period goals to help the Washington Capitals put a decade of playoff frustration behind them with a 4-0 victory over the Tampa Bay Lightning in Game 7 of the Eastern Conference final Wednesday night. Braden Holtby stopped 29 shots for his second straight shutout and the Lightning, who led the NHL in goals during the regular season, failed to score in the last 159 minutes, 27 seconds _ a stretch of nearly eight periods. Ovechkin, who had never played a team that advanced beyond the second round, scored 1:02 into the winner-take-all showdown he had described as probably the “biggest game in my life.” Nicklas Backstrom had an empty-netter to complete the rout. To earn a spot in the Stanley Cup Final, where they’ll play the Vegas Golden Knights, the Capitals beat the top-seeded Lightning three times on the road, improving to 8-2 away from home this postseason. It’s Washington’s first Cup Final appearance since 1998, and the 1st during Ovechkin’s 13-year career.

NFL – NFL owners adopt new policy to address anthem protests
The NFL is taking steps to end player protests during the national anthem. Owners have approved a new policy that permits players to stay in the locker room during the “The Star-Spangled Banner” but requires them to stand if they come to the field. The rule was passed without any discussions with the NFL Players Association, which said it will challenge any part of the new policy that violates the collective bargaining agreement. Also at the owners meeting, the NFL awarded the 2023 Super Bowl to Glendale, Arizona, and will host the 2024 title game in New Orleans. The league also said next year’s draft will be held in Nashville.
