Michigan lawmakers are facing a possible surplus of $500 million over the next two years, and it’s looking like at least some of that money will go toward fixing the state’s roads. State Representative Kim LaSata tells WSJM News she was hoping for a tax cut.

“In an ideal world, my belief is that the money would be returned to the taxpayer in the form of a tax reduction, maybe by doing what we tried to do before, rolling the tax rate back to where it was prior to the 2007 budget crisis,” LaSata said.

However, LaSata tells us recent state House votes make it appear the surplus will not go toward a tax cut. She says the priorities seem to be with roads, school security, and paying off debt. LaSata also suspects a chunk of the surplus may go into the state’s Rainy Day Fund, which now sits at nearly $1 billion.
