Tigers 3, Mariners 2 – Tigers put together late rally for 3-2 win over Mariners
Jose Iglesias’ two-out, two-run single in the eighth inning gave Detroit the lead, and Tigers’ pitchers allowed just two hits over the final six innings in a 3-2 win over the Seattle Mariners on Thursday night. Detroit rallied against Seattle’s bullpen and specifically eighth-inning regular Nick Vincent (1-1) to take the opener of the four-game series. With two outs in the eighth, Vincent allowed a single to Mikie Mahtook and walked James McCann to load the bases. Seattle stayed with Vincent and Iglesias got enough of a 1-0 cutter to send it up the middle and off the glove of shortstop Jean Segura diving to try and stop the grounder. Detroit starter Matthew Boyd struck out a career-high nine and didn’t factor in the decision but was part of a solid night by the Tigers’ staff. After Mitch Haniger’s RBI single in the third inning, the Mariners’ only hits were a pair of singles by Guillermo Heredia _ one in the fourth and another leading off the seventh inning.
White Sox 4, Rangers 2 – Castillo helps White Sox rally past Rangers 4-2
Welington Castillo hit a tiebreaking two-run single in Chicago’s four-run eighth, helping the White Sox beat the Texas Rangers 4-2 on Thursday night in the opener of a four-game series between two of the worst teams in the AL. Yoan Moncada sparked the winning rally with a ground-rule double after Jose Leclerc (1-1) retired the first two batters of the inning. Moncada advanced on a passed ball and scored when Leclerc committed a throwing error on Yolmer Sanchez’s tapper back to the mound. The White Sox then used three consecutive walks to tie it at 2 before Rangers manager Jeff Banister pulled Leclerc in favor of Kevin Jepsen. One of the walks was intentional, but there were some close calls along the way and Banister was thrown out by plate umpire Paul Nauert after he made the pitching change.
Cubs at Braves – PPD, Rain – Cubs-Braves postponed by rain; makeup game on Aug 30
The final game of a three-game series between the Chicago Cubs and the Atlanta Braves has been postponed because of rain. The game will be made up Aug. 30. Rain began falling a few minutes before Thursday’s scheduled first pitch at 7:35 p.m. It was coming down heavily an hour later and was called at 9:56 p.m. It marked the sixth postponement for the Cubs this season and their second
against Atlanta, which won a makeup game 6-5 on Monday at Wrigley Field.

He led the Hawks to the 2015 Eastern Conference finals, but parted company with the team after going 24-58 this season. NCAAMBB – ACC seeks to expand NCAA tourney by 4 teams, change rules
The Atlantic Coast Conference wants to expand the NCAA Tournament and change several college basketball rules. Commissioner John Swofford says the league will propose legislation to expand
the NCAA Tournament from 68 to 72 teams. That would create a second set of First Four games in the western half of the country to go with the tournament-opening ones in Dayton, Ohio. The league also supports moving back the 3-point line, widening the lane and having the shot clock reset to 20 seconds after offensive rebounds.
Golf – PGA – Leishman cuts down Trinity Forest
Marc Leishman opened with a 10-under 61 to take the first-round lead at the AT&T Byron Nelson. He enjoyed early success on the new links-style Trinity Forest course. J.J. Spaun had six birdies in a seven-hole stretch before finishing with a 64. Jimmy Walker also fired a 7-under 64. Jordan Spieth was eight shots back in his hometown event, which returned to Dallas after 35 years at the TPC Four Seasons in suburban Irving.

Hildebrand was driving behind a long line of cars when his car drifted up in the fourth turn, hit the wall and slid back down the track before rolling to a
stop. He was examined at the infield medical center, released and cleared to drive.
Olympics – Suspension of Russian anti-doping agency remains in force
Russia’s anti-doping agency remains suspended after world anti-doping officials declared the country had made no progress on its key reinstatement criteria. The World Anti-Doping Agency’s executive committee confirmed RUSADA’s continued suspension at its meeting today. WADA has called for access to the Moscow anti-doping lab and for Russia to accept the findings of the McLaren Report that detailed a state-sponsored doping scheme that tainted the Sochi Olympics and other events.
