Last Night

Pittsburgh Pirates 3, Chicago White Sox 2
Atlanta Braves 4, Chicago Cubs 1

Indians 6, Tigers 0 – Bauer fans 10 as Indians blank Tigers 6-0
Trevor Bauer struck out 10 in eight sparkling innings, and the Cleveland Indians beat the Tigers 6-0 on Wednesday, avoiding a three-game sweep in Detroit.  The scuffling Indians lead the AL Central despite a .500 record, and this easy win was certainly welcome for Cleveland after a pair of losses to the injury-plagued Tigers. Bauer (3-3) retired his first 12 hitters, and Michael Brantley hit his sixth home run of the season. Ryan Carpenter (0-1) allowed five earned runs and seven hits in five innings for Detroit in his second big league start. Tigers center fielder JaCoby Jones left in the third inning with a left hip injury.

Pirates 3, White Sox 2 – Bell’s single lifts Pirates over reeling White Sox 3-2
Pinch-hitter Josh Bell singled to break a seventh-inning tie, and the streaking Pittsburgh Pirates beat the skidding Chicago White Sox 3-2 Wednesday. Pittsburgh has won seven of eight and improved to 10-2 in interleague play this season. Chicago has lost eight of nine and 13 of 15. A major league-worst 10-29, the White Sox have matched their worst start since 1948. Pittsburgh has won eight straight over Chicago, outscoring the White Sox 45-17. The Pirates also swept a two-game series last week against them in Chicago. With the score tied 2-2, Elias Diaz doubled off Joakim Soria (0-2) leading off the seventh and Jordy Mercer walked with one out. Bell, rested from the starting lineup in a day game after a night game, grounded a single into left.

Braves 4, Cubs 1 – Acuna gets big hit as Braves score 3 in 8th, beat Cubs 4-1
Ronald Acuna Jr. drove in Ozzie Albies with the tiebreaking run in the eighth inning to send the Atlanta Braves past the Chicago Cubs 4-1 on Wednesday night. Carl Edwards Jr. (2-1) allowed five straight baserunners in Atlanta’s three-run eighth, including a bases-loaded walk to Tyler Flowers, without getting an out. Justin Hancock also forced in a run with a walk to Johan Camargo.  The Braves’ big inning was set up by Albies’ triple to the wall in center field past Albert Almora Jr., who robbed Flowers of a probable home run earlier in the game. Albies scored on Acuna’s second hit, a sharp single to left field off Edwards. Acuna moved to third on Freddie Freeman’s single against the shift to the opening on the left side of the infield. Freeman advanced to second on the play. Following an intentional walk to Nick Markakis, Edwards walked Flowers to force in a run.

MLB – Chief Wahoo protester pleads guilty to theft of grant money
A man who has held protests saying the Cleveland Indians’ Chief Wahoo mascot is racist has pleaded guilty to stealing money from federal grants aimed at helping Native Americans. The U.S. Attorney’s Office in Cleveland said Wednesday that 71-year-old Robert Roche pleaded guilty to two counts of theft from programs receiving federal funds.  Prosecutors say the Cleveland man conspired to divert money from the American Indian Education Center where he served as executive director. They say Roche and a consultant embezzled at least $180,000 from Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration grants and that Roche diverted $77,000 for his personal use. Sentencing is set for Aug. 29.  Defense attorney Larry Zukerman has declined to comment.

Nassar – $500M settlement reached with Michigan State in Nassar case
Michigan State University reached a $500 million settlement with hundreds of women and girls who say they were sexually assaulted by former sports doctor Larry Nassar.  The deal was announced Wednesday by the university and lawyers for 332 victims. Brian Breslin, chairman of the school’s governing board, says Michigan State is “truly sorry” for what Nassar’s victims and families went through. The university didn’t disclose how it will pay for the settlement. Also, state regulators filed a complaint against Dr. William Strampel, who was dean of Michigan State’s medical school and Nassar’s former boss. Strampel is accused of failing to properly supervise Nassar.  Nassar sexually assaulted women and girls while working at Michigan State. He also worked for USA Gymnastics, which trains athletes for the Olympics. He is currently serving sentences that will likely keep him in prison for life.
