The millage rate is locked in. At a Monday meeting, St. Joseph City Commissioners gave their final reading to some millage increases they discussed last week. The street millage is going up by 2.55 mills, or about $200 per year for a home with a taxable value of $140,000. City Manager John Hodgson tells WSJM News the millage increase works out to more than $1 million per year for streets. He thinks it could be enough.

“It’s hard to say with certainty what things will be five years, ten year, 15 years out, but we believe this is a good target to work off of,” Hodgson said.

The street millage increase came after years of study to determine future infrastructure needs. Hodgson tells us there have been “startlingly few” complaints.

“Folks, of course, don’t want to pay more in taxes any more than I’d like to pay, but they seem to understand the need for the work,” Hodgson said.

Hodgson tell us the first street project to be done with the new money will be work on Kingsley, Morton, and Orchard, headed over to Langely. That’s set for 2020. The library millage will also go up by about $8 per year for that same $140,000 home.
