After being diagnosed with cancer last fall, Michigan Schools Superintendent Brian Whiston passed away on Monday at the age of 56. Co-President of the State Board of Education Dr. Richard Zeile told Michigan News Network Whiston had a gift for negotiating challenging issues.

“Bringing harmony among different egos and especially visions as to Michigan’s way forward, he anticipated so much of what has been called for by the governor’s 21st Century Commission in his top ten in ten plans for Michigan to go forward,” Zeile said.

Whiston was appointed State Superintendent in April 2015. That’s after he served as Dearborn Public Schools Superintendent. Dearborn is the state’s third largest school district.
