Royals 4, Tigers 2 – Moustakas helps Royals top Tigers 4-2, win first series
The Kansas City Royals won a series for the first time in 11 tries this season, beating the Detroit Tigers 4-2 Sunday as Mike Moustakas drove in three runs with a double and sacrifice fly. Kansas City took three of four from the Tigers. The Royals had lost nine previous series this year and split one. Jakob Junis (4-2) improved to 3-0 against the Tigers this year and matched his career high with eight strikeouts. He allowed two runs and eight hits in seven-plus innings. Kelvin Herrera retired pinch-hitter Nicholas Castellanos on a game-ending flyout with a man on for his seventh save in eight chances. Matthew Boyd (1-3) gave up four runs and six hits in seven innings, dropping to 2-6 against Kansas City.

Twins 5, White Sox 3 – Twins rally late for a 5-3 victory over Shields, White Sox
Chicago’s James Shields pitched a no-hitter into the seventh inning before the Minnesota Twins rallied late for a 5-3 victory over the White Sox on Sunday. With the Twins trailing 2-0, Eduardo Escobar broke up the no-hitter with a one-out single in the seventh. Eddie Rosario then followed with a single to drive in Brian Dozier, who led off the inning with a walk. Shields, who retired the first 16 batters, got the next batter Robbie Grossman on a fly to center for the second out (with Escobar advancing to third) before being lifted after 91 pitches. Left-hander Luis Avilan was brought in to face lefty Logan Morrison, but the strategy backfired as Morrison dropped a soft liner just inside the right-field foul line for a two-run double to give the Twins a 3-2 lead.    Shields allowed three runs and two hits in 6 2/3 innings.

Cardinals 4, Cubs 3 – F/14 – Fowler’s 2-run HR in 14th rallies Cardinals past Cubs, 4-3
Dexter Fowler hit a two-run home run with two outs in the bottom of the 14th inning to help the St. Louis Cardinals finish a weekend sweep of the Chicago Cubs with a 4-3 win on Sunday night. The victory was the Cardinals’ fifth straight, matching their season-best winning streak. It also improved St. Louis to 4-1 on the season against the rival Cubs, a year after Chicago won 14 of the 19 games between the two. After Chicago took a 3-2 lead on Javier Baez’s solo shot in the top of the 14th, Luke Farrell (1-2) struck out the first two Cardinals batters he faced before allowing an infield single to Harrison Bader. Fowler then lifted a 2-2 pitch down the right-field line and just over the glove of Chicago outfielder Jason Heyward.  Mike Mayers (1-0) earned the win in relief for St. Louis, allowing one run in three innings. The loss was the season-high fifth straight for Chicago, the team’s worst losing stretch since a six-game skid in late May last season.

MLB – Cards’ Molina has surgery, out 1 month after groin injury
The Cardinals say catcher Yadier Molina has undergone surgery and is expected to miss at least four weeks after being hit in the groin by a foul tip.  St. Louis has placed the eight-time All-Star on the 10-day disabled list. Molina left Saturday’s game against the Cubs in the eighth inning after being hit in the groin when Kris Bryant a tipped 102-mph pitch from reliever Jordan Hicks.  The Redbirds also placed reliever Dominic Leone on the 10-day DL and called up right-hander Mike Mayers. Leone left Friday’s game with upper right arm nerve irritation.

NASCAR – Harvick takes the checkered flag at Dover for 4th win
Kevin Harvick dominated a race interrupted by rain and drove to his NASCAR Cup Series-high fourth victory of the season at Dover International Speedway. Bowyer was second, then Daniel Suarez, Martin Truex Jr. and Kurt Busch.
