In Lansing, debate is ongoing over legislation that would create a work requirement for those receiving Medicaid. State House Speaker Tom Leonard spoke to Michigan News Network about it.
“This is something that I do personally support,” Leonard said. “I’d like to see it get done, but we do want to see it get done. We’d like to see it signed into law. We want to give Senator Shirkey his space to work with the governor, to work with his office, to work out any of the issues they might have so once we get it to the governor’s desk we can get it signed into law.”
Bills supported by the Senate are currently pending in the House Appropriations Committee. The legislation would require some able-bodied recipients to participate in at least 29 hours of work per week to qualify for benefits. Governor Rick Snyder is opposed to the idea.
