St. Louis Cardinals 3, Chicago White Sox 2
Colorado Rockies 3, Chicago Cubs 1

Tigers 2, Rays 1 – Boyd, Tigers edge Tampa Bay 2-1
Matthew Boyd allowed one run in six innings, and that finally was enough to earn the left-hander a victory when the Detroit Tigers beat the Tampa Bay Rays 2-1 on Tuesday night. Boyd (1-2) began this season with three straight outings of at least six innings with one run allowed, but he took a loss and two no-decisions. Against Tampa Bay, he allowed seven hits and a walk and struck out seven, and his teammates provided just enough support. Leonys Martin hit a tiebreaking double in the fifth. Chris Archer (2-2) allowed two runs and six hits in six innings. He walked one and struck out six. Shane Greene, who allowed a pair of ninth-inning homers in a loss to Tampa Bay on Monday, worked a perfect ninth a night later for his fifth save in seven chances.

Cardinals 3, White Sox 2 – Cardinals rally in 9th, top White Sox 3-2 on Molina’s single
Matt Carpenter homered to start a ninth-inning rally and Yadier Molina ended it with a single to drive in the winning run, lifting the St. Louis Cardinals to a 3-2 victory over the Chicago White Sox on Tuesday night. St. Louis snapped a three-game losing streak.  Carpenter tied it at 2 with a leadoff homer off White Sox closer Joakim Soria (0-1). It was Carpenter’s 100th career home run and his first since April 10. With one out, Marcell Ozuna doubled off the right-field wall. Molina then singled to left field to score Ozuna. Bud Norris (1-0) picked up his first win of the season with a perfect ninth. The White Sox wasted a good start by James Shields, who pitched six strong innings after giving up a leadoff home run.

Rockies 3, Cubs 1 – Rockies snap Cubs’ 5-game win streak with 3-1 victory
Charlie Blackmon and David Dahl opened the game with consecutive homers off Kyle Hendricks, and the Colorado Rockies cooled off the Chicago Cubs with a 3-1 victory on Tuesday. With the wind blowing out on a warm night at Wrigley Field, Nolan Arenado also homered as Colorado stopped a three-game slide. Jon Gray (3-4) pitched seven crisp innings for his second straight win after dropping three in a row. The Cubs had won a season-high five straight games, scoring three runs or fewer in each one. They got another solid start from Hendricks (2-2), but their recent trouble at the plate finally caught up to them.

MLB – Ohio’s top court to hear arguments on promotions tax dispute
The Ohio Supreme Court has set a date for arguments in a dispute over promotions offered by the Cincinnati Reds to ticket buyers including bobbleheads and other items. At issue is whether the Reds are exempt from paying tax on the purchase of the promotional items. Attorneys for the Reds argue they don’t have to pay tax on the purchase of promotional items because they resell them as part of the ticket package. Ohio law exempts companies from paying tax on items they buy to resell.  The state tax commissioner says the promotional items should be taxed because the Reds bought the items as giveaways and they aren’t selling them with the tickets. The state Supreme Court on Tuesday scheduled oral arguments for June 13.

NCAA – Chicago State hires former Bears, Notre Dame DT Zorich as AD
Former Chicago Bears and Notre Dame defensive tackle Chris Zorich has been hired as athletic director at Chicago State. A Chicago product who was on Notre Dame’s 1988 national championship team and played for the Bears from 1991-96, Zorich replaces interim AD Tracy Dildy. The school says he will start work on May 8. The 49-year-old Zorich joins a school that has been hit hard by budget problems in recent years and is looking for two new basketball coaches. Chicago State let Dildy go following a 3-29 season. The school also parted with women’s coach Angela Jackson, whose program endured a Division I record 59-game losing streak before beating Utah Valley on Feb. 8. Zorich most recently was AD at Prairie State, a community college in Chicago Heights. Zorich ran into financial difficulties after his playing career. He was sentenced in 2013 to three years of probation following a federal tax evasion conviction.

Tennis – Wimbledon singles champs will get about $3 million
The winners of the singles titles at Wimbledon will each receive just over $3 million as part of a 7.6 percent increase in the total prize money at this year’s tournament. The All England Club says the total prize fund will be $46.5 million. First-round losers will receive $53,000, but they may have to forfeit their prize money if they retire from the match or perform “below professional standards.” Injured players will receive 50 percent of their first-round prize money if they withdraw on site by the Thursday before the start of play. An injured player’s replacement would take the other 50 percent.
