Testimony On Medicaid Work Requirement

Hearings on legislation to make people work in order to receive Medicaid benefits have started in the state House. Bill sponsor state Senator Mike Shirkey told the House Appropriations Committee Wednesday morning work is a good thing.

“The best way to find a better paying job is to have a job,” Shirkey said.

Shirkey says the legislation would help companies who need workers. The legislation, which passed the State Senate last month, calls for Medicaid recipients to work 29 hours per week. People would be exempt from the requirements if they met certain criteria, like being over 64, having a disability, being pregnant, or being a caretaker for a family member under the age of six.
