Rays 3, Tigers 2 – Cron, Miller homer in ninth, lift Rays over Tigers 3-2
C.J. Cron and Brad Miller each homered in the ninth inning and the Tampa Bay Rays held on for a 3-2 victory over the Detroit Tigers on Monday night. With the game scoreless, Detroit closer Shane Greene (1-2) walked Denard Span to start the ninth. Cron followed by hitting a 2-0 fastball into the right-center field seats for his seventh homer of the season. After Matt Duffy popped out, Brad Miller homered into the left-field bullpens to make it 3-0 and end Greene’s night. But Detroit loaded the bases with one out in the bottom of the ninth on two hit batters and an infield single. Jose Alvarado replaced Chaz Roe and allowed a two-run single to Victor Martinez, then retired James McCann before walking John Hicks to load the bases again. Dixon Machado then grounded into a game-ending force at second to give Alvarado his first career save. The Rays have won nine of their last 10 games after a 4-13 start.

Cubs 3, Rockies 2 – Lester helps Cubs beat Rockies 3-2 for 5th straight win
Jon Lester pitched effectively into the sixth inning, continuing an impressive stretch for Chicago’s rotation and helping the Cubs beat the Colorado Rockies 3-2 on Monday night for their season-high fifth straight victory. Lester allowed two runs and five hits, struck out five and walked three. Luke Farrell (1-0) worked 1 1/3 innings of perfect relief for his first career win, and Steve Cishek got two outs for his first save. The Rockies put runners on first and second with two outs in the ninth before Cishek struck out Nolan Arenado. Lester extended the streak for Chicago’s starting pitchers to 33 2/3 innings without giving up an earned run. The Cubs have permitted just four runs and 21 hits during their last five games.

Romeo Langford finally ended the speculation about his college plans Monday.  He’s staying home, at Indiana. One day after the prized recruit was named the IndyStar’s Mr. Basketball Award winner, he stood in front of a large crowd inside New Albany’s high school gym and made it official by putting on a crimson Hoosiers hat. “I want to thank all the coaches who recruited me and saw something in me and wanted me to play for their great programs,” he said, winding up to one of the most anticipated high school announcements in years in this basketball-rich state. “With that being said, I’m going to continue my education and basketball career at…” He immediately becomes the top prospect in one of next fall’s top recruiting classes. Olympics – Calgary seeks bid leaders as it mulls 2026 Winter Olympics
Calgary is looking for a leadership team for a possible bid for the 2026 Winter Olympics. The city hosted the games in 1988. With the deadline to submit bids to the IOC nine months away, Calgary’s city council hasn’t decided if it will proceed. Calgary recently put out a call on its website to those interested in becoming the chief executive officer and chair of a bid group. Candidates were asked to be ready to begin such work May 30.  The only other Canadian city to hold the Winter Games was Vancouver, British Columbia, in 2010. The Vancouver bid was led by John Furlong and the late Jack Poole. Bob Niven was president of Calgary’s bid for 1988, joined by Frank King and Bill Warren.
