Pirates 1, Tigers 0 – Dickerson’s disputed homer lifts Pirates over Tigers 1-0
Corey Dickerson celebrated his first game-ending home run in the major leagues. Twice.
Dickerson’s disputed one-out drive in the ninth inning that lifted the Pittsburgh Pirates over the Detroit Tigers 1-0 Thursday.  He sent an 0-1 slider from Alex Wilson (0-1) just over the 21-foot-high wall in right field, at first standing at the plate and watching the drive before starting to jog up the first-base line. A fan in a black Pirates sweatshirt reached out and caught the ball, and Wilson immediately pointed to ask for a video the initial home-run call.  etroit’s Michael Fulmer struck out nine in six innings while giving up four hits. Leonys Martin was 2 for 4 with a triple and also reached on an error and went 5 for 14 (.357) in the series with two home runs and three RBIs

White Sox 6, Royals 3 – Davidson homers twice, White Sox beat Royals 6-3
Matt Davidson is disproving the notion power hitters don’t like Kauffman Stadium. Davidson hit two of Chicago’s five home runs, leading the White Sox to a 6-3 victory over the Kansas City Royals on Thursday night. Davidson, who drove in three runs, has seven home runs this season _ five against the Royals in Kansas City. He hit three out in the season opener March 29. In this game, he homered in the fourth and then hit a two-run shot in the sixth that went 450 feet to left-center.  Yoan Moncada homered to open the first inning for Chicago for the second straight game, and Yolmer Sanchez and Trayce Thompson also went deep.

Cubs 1, Brewers 0 – Hendricks, Cubs win 1-0, stop Brewers’ 8-game win streak
Kyle Hendricks outpitched Chase Anderson with seven crisp innings, and the Chicago Cubs stopped Milwaukee’s eight-game win streak with a 1-0 victory over the Brewers on Thursday night. Hendricks (2-1) allowed four hits, struck out five and walked none in his best outing this season. Anderson (2-2) stayed with him until Kyle Schwarber drove a 0-1 pitch over the wall in right for his seventh homer with one out in the sixth. Carl Edwards Jr. worked the eighth and Brandon Morrow finished the six-hitter for his fifth save in five chances. With two outs and Ryan Braun on first, Travis Shaw flied out to the warning track in left.

NBA says referees missed LeBron goaltending call in Game 5
The NBA said LeBron James’ block in the closing seconds of Game 5 on Indiana’s Victor Oladipo should have been called goaltending.  In the league’s Last Two Minute Report posted Thursday, the NBA said the three officials missed the call with 5.1 seconds left. The league said the video shows James blocked Oladipo’s shot “after it makes contact with the backboard.” Under league rules, the play could not be reviewed because it wasn’t called on the floor. James then hit a 3-pointer at the buzzer to give the Cavaliers a 98-95 win and a 3-2 lead in the series. The Pacers did not contest the block while on the floor, but later in their locker room they complained about the no-call.

NFL Draft – Top 3 –
Browns select Mayfield with No. 1 pick

Baker Mayfield, until the past few days considered an outsider to be chosen at the top of the NFL draft, has been taken by the Cleveland Browns to begin Thursday night’s selections.  The first Heisman Trophy winner taken No. 1 overall in the following draft since Cam Newton went to Carolina in 2010, Mayfield joins a team that went 0-16 in 2017.  The Browns were sold on the Oklahoma star’s leadership skills and creativity inside the pocket and outside. The Sooners went 34-6 with him.  The New York Giants selected Penn State running back Saquon Barkley with the second pick in the 2018 NFL draft. The All-American with speed, power, shiftiness and excellent hands is considered this year’s best player. Barkley also is a sensational kick returner. The cool, calm and confident kid from Southern California is going from Hollywood to the Big Apple. The New York Jets selected USC quarterback Sam Darnold with the No. 3 overall pick in the NFL draft Thursday night.  The Jets had traded up from sixth overall with Indianapolis with the expressed mission of finding a top quarterback.

NFL Draft – Lions – Lions draft Arkansas center Frank Ragnow No. 20 overall

The Detroit Lions have selected Arkansas center Frank Ragnow with the No. 20 overall pick in the NFL draft, hoping to give their lackluster running game a boost. Detroit desperately needs to improve its ground game and took a step toward that goal Thursday night. The Lions ranked last in the NFL last year in rushing offense and have been among the league’s worst on the ground offensively in recent years. Ragnow will have a chance to start as a rookie, likely next to guards T.J. Lang and Graham Glasgow. The 6-foot-5, 312-pound Ragnow is a big and powerful lineman, who scouts say has good awareness. His father, Jon, died of a heart attack during the 2016 football season and he continued to play for the Razoarbacks.

NFL Draft – Bears – Bears draft Georgia LB Roquan Smith with No. 8 pick in draft
The Chicago Bears have drafted Georgia linebacker Roquan Smith with the No. 8 overall pick, adding a potential cornerstone on defense rather than another offensive player. The Bears have spent the offseason collecting pieces they believe will help Mitchell Trubisky develop into a franchise quarterback. But when Indianapolis took Notre Dame guard Quenton Nelson with the sixth pick, it became apparent Chicago would address the defense. The Butkus Award winner as college football’s best linebacker in 2017, Smith has the speed to wreak havoc on opponents. At 6-foot-1, 236 pounds he is a bit undersized but has the ability to drop back in pass coverage. Smith figures to play inside with former first-round pick Leonard Floyd on the outside.

NCAAFB – Sources: Shea Patterson’s request to play immediately appears close
Shea Patterson’s long winter of waiting appears to be coming to an end.  The NCAA is expected to let the Michigan quarterback know soon if he will be able to take the field for his new team in the upcoming season.  No official decision had been reached Thursday night, according to multiple sources close to the situation, but the months-long process of evaluating Patterson’s waiver request is nearing its conclusion. Patterson transferred to Michigan in December after two seasons at Ole Miss. He asked the NCAA to waive its usual rule that keeps transfers on the sideline for one year because he says his former coaches at Ole Miss led him to believe the scope and possible punishment related to an ongoing investigation into rules violations at the school was smaller than it actually was.  Patterson is one of several former Rebels who left the school as underclassmen this offseason after the NCAA banned Ole Miss from playing in a bowl at the conclusion of the 2018 season. At least six of the other recently departed players are also petitioning or plan to petition for immediate eligibility.  Ole Miss objected to Patterson’s waiver request earlier this month with the school saying it didn’t believe he and the other players were told lies about the future of the program.

Golf – Lydia Ko tied for early lead at chilly Lake Merced
Lydia Ko was back on top at Lake Merced.  Ko shot a 4-under 68 on a chilly Thursday morning at the LPGA MEDIHEAL Championship for a share of the first-round lead. Jessica Korda, Caroline Hedwall, In-Kyung Kim and Su Oh joined Ko atop the leaderboard in the LPGA Tour’s return to Lake Merced after a year away. The Swinging Skirts LPGA winner at the course in 2014 and 2015, Ko eagled the par-5 fifth and had four birdies and a bogey. The 21-year-old from New Zealand has 14 LPGA Tour wins, the last in July 2016. Korda, playing alongside Kim a group ahead of Ko, also eagled the fifth and had four birdies and a bogey. Korda won in Thailand in February in her return from jaw surgery. Lexi Thompson, Sei Young Kim, Charley Hull and Celine Herbin shot 69.

Golf – Woods returns from post-Masters break to play Quail Hollow
Tiger Woods is returning from his post-Masters break at the Wells Fargo Championship next week.  It will be his first time playing at the Quail Hollow Club in Charlotte, N.C., since he missed the cut in 2012. Woods won the tournament in 2007. Woods announced Thursday he will be playing consecutive weeks at the Wells Fargo Championship and The Players Championship. It will be the third time since returning from back surgery that he plays back-to-back weeks.
