Tigers 13, Pirates 10 – Game 1 – ed-hot Castellanos powers Tigers over Pirates 13-10
Nicholas Castellanos stayed hot with four hits and a key home run and the Detroit Tigers used 20 hits to outslug the Pittsburgh Pirates 13-10 on Wednesday night in the opener of a doubleheader.  The teams combined for 34 hits, including four from Tigers slugger Miguel Cabrera and three from Jeimer Candelario.  Castellanos was coming off consecutive three-hit games against Kansas City. He’s 10 for 15 with two homers and nine RBIs in Detroit’s last three games, and he’s batting .337 for the season. Candelario homered, doubled and scored five runs for Detroit. Leonys Martin led off the game with his third home run of the season, and James McCann also went deep as the Tigers won for the sixth time in eight games.  Corey Dickerson also had three hits for Pittsburgh, and Colin Moran homered. Daniel Stumpf (1-0) retired all four batters he faced for his first major league win. Shane Greene pitched a 1-2-3 ninth for his fourth save in six opportunities.

Pirates 8, Tigers 3 – Game 2 – Osuna HR, Pirates beat Tigers 8-3 for doubleheader split
Jose Osuna, called up from the minor to serve as an extra player for the second game of a doubleheader, hit a three-run homer to lift the Pittsburgh Pirates to an 8-3 victory on Wednesday night and a split with the Detroit Tigers. Major League Baseball rules allow teams to carry a 26th man in second games and the Pirates recalled the right-handed hitting Osuna from Triple-A Indianapolis to play right field against lefty Matthew Boyd. Osuna then opened the scoring with a shot to center field in the second inning. Chad Kuhl (3-1) tied a career high with eight strikeouts in six innings in the second game. He allowed three runs, six hits and one walk in improving to 3-0 lifetime against Detroit.  Boyd (1-1) gave up four runs and seven hits in 3 2/3 innings. He had given up just three runs in his first three starts and 19 1/3 innings. Elias Diaz had three hits and Starling Marte drove in two runs for the Pirates. Leonys Martin hit a two-run homer in the fifth to get the Tigers within 4-3.

Mariners 4, White Sox 3 – Zunino homers to back Hernandez, Mariners beat White Sox 4-3
Mike Zunino homered and scored twice to back Felix Hernandez in the Seattle Mariners’ 4-3 victory over the Chicago White Sox on Wednesday. Chicago’s Yoan Moncada hit his first career leadoff homer.  At 5-16, the White Sox are off to their worst start since 1950.  Zunino doubled and scored in a two-run third and gave the Mariners a 4-3 lead with a solo drive to right against James Shields in the sixth. Nelson Cruz added three hits, including two RBI singles.  Hernandez (3-2) settled down after a shaky start, scattering three runs and seven hits over six innings. The 2010 AL Cy Young Award winner struck out six and walked two.

Indians 4, Cubs 1 – Homers lift Indians past Cubs 4-1
Francisco Lindor and Edwin Encarnacion hit sixth-inning home runs and the Cleveland Indians beat the Chicago Cubs 4-1 on Wednesday night.  Lindor’s leadoff homer against Jon Lester (2-1) broke a 1-all tie in the sixth, and Encarnacion homered into the bleachers with two outs. Lester allowed only one hit until Brandon Guyer’s two-out home run in the fifth tied it. Miller relieved Trevor Bauer (2-2) with a runner on first and Cleveland leading 3-1. Bauer held the Cubs to one run and four hits in 6 2/3 innings. Cody Allen pitched the ninth for his fifth save. Miller hasn’t allowed a run in 10 innings this season. He fell behind Rizzo 2-0 before grabbing at his leg.  Lester allowed three runs in seven innings. Cleveland added a run in the eighth on Rizzo’s throwing error. Rizzo had an RBI single in the fifth.

NCAAFB – NCAA board endorses recommended changes
The NCAA Board of Governors has unanimously voted to endorse the recommendations of a panel proposing sweeping changes to college basketball to combat a corruption scandal.  That’s according to Chairman Bud Peterson, the president at Georgia Tech. In a 60-page report Wednesday, the independent commission, led by former Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice, recommended separating pro and college tracks, permitting players to return to school after going undrafted by the NBA and banning cheating coaches for life.

Many school with ties to coach accused of sexual abuse
Several dozen colleges have kept ties to an influential volleyball coach long after he was publicly accused of sexually abusing and raping underage girls who trained with him in the 1980s. The coach’s accusers have been pressing Michigan State University for months to sever all ties with Rick Butler. They say all schools have a moral obligation to end their relationships with him.  The campaign against Butler comes as Michigan State deals with questions about whether it could have done more to thwart Dr. Larry Nassar from abusing scores of young gymnasts over 20 years.

Atlanta 2nd franchise for new spring football league
Atlanta has been chosen to join Orlando as franchises in the new Alliance of American Football that will begin play next February. The Atlanta Alliance has hired former NFL coach Brad Childress as its head coach, with Michael Vick serving as Childress’ offensive coordinator. Atlanta is the second city to get a franchise in the league that was created by Pro Football Hall of Fame member Bill Polian and longtime TV and film producer Charlie Ebersol. The Alliance has a television deal with CBS and plans to open its first season the week after next year’s Super Bowl. Another veteran coach, Steve Spurrier, is in charge of the Orlando team.
