White Sox 10, Mariners 4 – White Sox beat Mariners 10-4, stop 7-game skid
Jose Abreu had four hits that included a pair of home runs, Yoan Moncada was a single shy of the cycle and the Chicago White Sox beat the Seattle Mariners 10-4 Monday to end a seven-game losing streak. Chicago became the first big league team to open a game with seven straight hits since Colorado against the visiting Los Angeles Dodgers on Sept. 17, 2014, according to the Elias Sports Bureau. Moncada’s leadoff triple was followed by five straight singles and Matt Davidson’s double off Mike Leake (2-2) in a five-run first inning. Abreu raised his home run total to six this season with his 12th multihomer game for the White Sox. After getting outscored 27-2 in three losses to Houston, Chicago had a season-high 18 hits.

MLB – White Sox RHP Farquhar `progressing well’ after surgery
White Sox reliever Danny Farquhar is talking to his doctors and family after surgery over the weekend to address a ruptured aneurysm that occurred during Friday night’s game against Houston. Farquhar remains in critical but stable condition in the intensive care unit at Rush University Medical Center. The team announced Monday the 31-year-old right-hander is expected to remain hospitalized for the next few weeks. Farquhar passed out in the sixth inning Friday night after getting two outs against Houston. He was helped by team medical personnel and on-site EMTs, and he regained consciousness before he was taken to a hospital by ambulance. Additional testing revealed a brain hemorrhage caused by a ruptured aneurysm. He had surgery Saturday to address the aneurysm, and the team reported his medical team felt he was “progressing well.”

MLB – Tigers designate VerHagen for assignment, recall Gerber
The Detroit Tigers have designated right-hander Drew VerHagen for assignment and recalled outfielder Mike Gerber from Triple-A Toledo. The team announced the moves Monday. The Tigers had the day off before playing at Pittsburgh on Tuesday night. VerHagen is 0-1 with a 6.30 ERA in nine relief appearances this season. He took the loss Sunday against Kansas City, walking two of the three hitters he faced.  Gerber made his major league debut Friday night as a pinch runner. He was with the Tigers that day as the 26th man for their doubleheader against the Royals.

NFL – Seahawks still have interest in Kaepernick
Colin Kaepernick remains on the Seattle Seahawks’ radar. Head coach Pete Carroll says the team hasn’t closed the door on the possibility of adding Kaepernick to the roster, but how much further they pursue it may depend on the upcoming NFL draft.  Reports surfaced earlier this month that Seattle pulled out of a planned workout for Kaepernick, who has been without an NFL team since the end of the 2016 season. Carroll said the reports of what happened with the intended workout were “blown up.” Seattle has been one of the few teams to show any interest in Kaepernick following his protests during the national anthem in the 2016 season with San Francisco.

NCAA – Michigan State kept ties to coach accused of sexual abuse
Michigan State University has maintained ties to a prominent volleyball coach for decades after he was publicly accused in 1995 of sexually abusing and raping six underage girls he trained. Letters obtained by The Associated Press from accusers’ advocates reveal the school has been pressured for at least a year to sever its relationship with Rick Butler. Butler runs suburban Chicago training facilities that have been a pipeline for top recruits, including to MSU.  MSU has been reeling from the scandal involving a gymnastics doctor, Larry Nassar, who molested young athletes. The university said in a Monday statement that Butler is currently “not affiliated with MSU.” But it didn’t address other questions put to it, including when any affiliation might have ended. Butler was never criminally charged. He denies sexually abusing anyone.

Horse Racing – Gronkowski to miss Kentucky Derby because of infection
Gronkowski won’t run in the Kentucky Derby because of a slight infection that will keep the England-based colt from traveling to the United States. Tom Ludt, who oversees Phoenix Thoroughbreds’ international operations, says Gronkowski spiked a fever last weekend and was treated with antibiotics. The colt is eating normally and responding to treatment, but Ludt says the owners want to put Gronkowski’s welfare first. Ludt said Monday that the owners are “beyond disappointed” to miss the May 5 race at Churchill Downs. New England Patriots star Rob Gronkowski recently bought an interest in the animal and said he was excited to meet his namesake during Derby week. The 3-year-old colt was undefeated in three races this year, including the Burradon Stakes at Newcastle on March 30, which earned him the first European slot in the Derby under Churchill Downs’ points system. He is trained by Jeremy Nosada and ridden by Jamie Spencer. Ludt says Gronkowski will be given time off and return to racing at some point. The colt was part of the first group of horses purchased by Phoenix Thoroughbreds, an investment fund formed last year by Dubai businessman Amer Abdulaziz.

IndyCar – Josef Newgarden wins in Alabama for 3rd time
Josef Newgarden has won the Indy Grand Prix of Alabama for the third time in four years.  Newgarden led for most of the way after starting on the pole en route to a second win in the first four races this season. He was followed by Ryan Hunter-Reay, James Hinchcliffe and rookie Robert Wickens. Newgarden built a commanding lead before taking his second pit stop with about 15 minutes left in the timed race at Barber Motorsports Park. With showers starting to fall, his team switched to rain tires for the stretch run while Sebastien Bourdais remained on the track and tried to hold him off. Bourdais finally relented and pitted with 7 minutes left and Newgarden wasn’t challenged after that. The race was completed Monday, a day after heavy rains led to 2 hours in delays, treacherous track conditions and ultimately a surrender to Mother Nature.
