Michigan State Police are reminding everyone about the state’s Safe Delivery of Newborns Law. Approved in 2001, the law allows for the parents of an infant to surrender it to an emergency service provider within 72 hours of its birth without facing a penalty. The baby has to be dropped off with a uniformed or otherwise identified employee or contractor of a fire department, hospital, or police station that is inside the building and on duty. Also, a newborn can be surrendered to an EMT responding to a 911 call. Since the law was approved, it has resulted in the safe delivery of 155 newborns. Lawmakers approved it in order to prevent the abandonment of unwanted babies. You can find out more about the Safe Delivery of Newborns Law at Michigan.gov/SafeDelivery.
