Coming up next week at the Niles District Library will be a presentation that takes a look at the civil rights movement in Michigan. Niles History Center Assistant Director Molly Watson tells WSJM News “Placing X: A Novel in Michigan Cultural History” will be a presentation by Dr. Michelle Johnson, a public scholar in the fields of African American history. She’ll talk about the popular young adult novel, X: A Novel.

“X: A Novel is actually a young adult fiction novel that was co-written by one of Malcolm X’s daughters, but the story is based on historical events surrounding his early life and particularly some of his time spent in Michigan,” Johnson said.

Watson says Niles has a rich history in the civil rights movement, and the library and history center put on programs that examine the issue. Next Thursday’s presentation at the library is open to anyone of any age. Just show up to the Niles District Library at 6:30 p.m.
