Coming up this month at the Disability Network of Southwest Michigan will be a presentation on the dos and don’ts of service animals. The network’s Paul Ecklund tells WSJM News the focus of the presentation is what constitutes a service animal versus an emotional support animal.

“There seems to be quite a bit of confusion about assistance animals in general, like what is actually a service animal as opposed to an emotional support animal or a companion animal,” Ecklund said.

Ecklund says the presentation could be useful for employers, landlords, or anyone interested. The topics covered will include the laws on service animals and emotional support animals. Eckland tells us service animals perform tasks for a disabled person, while emotional support animals often ease anxiety. Different rules apply to the two. The workshop will be Monday, April 30 from 3 to 4:30 p.m. at the network office on Lakeview Avenue in St. Joseph. To find out more or sign up, go to their website.
