It’s been a triumphant return home for the Benton Harbor Tigers boys basketball team. A pep rally was held Monday for the Tigers as they returned home from winning the state championship on Saturday. The team won partly thanks to a last minute three-pointer from sophomore Carlos Johnson. As the seconds ticked off after that, Coach Corey Sterling told WSJM News he held his breath.

“I was just hoping the time would run out,” Sterling said. “At that moment, I couldn’t even stand up. I was paralyzed, and I watched a guy miss a shot. When the horn sounded and the crowd roared that Tiger road, I just fell to my knees and prayed while everybody celebrated.”

Sterling told us he’s proud of his team, which he says deserved the win. It’s the first state championship for Tigers boys basketball since 1965. The Tigers will get a parade through the community this Thursday. They beat Grand Rapids Catholic Central on Saturday in East Lansing.
