State Senator John Proos has some new ideas for prison food service. That’s after Governor Rick Snyder recently proposed moving away from having private companies provide it. Proos tells WSJM News he’s put together a Senate workgroup to explore training non-violent prisoners to prepare and serve meals at Michigan Department of Corrections facilities.

“It really is an opportunity for these low risk prisoners to gain some knowledge and skills, skills that will give them the best opportunity to succeed once they return to our communities,” Proos said.

Proos says the food service industry has thousands of openings in the state, many of them full-time. He thinks the state has an opportunity to train some inmates in that industry with the idea they could learn job skills and find work when they’re released. Joining Proos on his work group are representatives of the DOC and the Michigan Restaurant Association.
