Michigan 61, Montanta 47 – Michigan beats Montana in last game of night
Charles Matthews had 20 points and 11 rebounds, Michigan locked down on defense and the third-seeded Wolverines beat Montana 61-47 in a plodding first-round NCAA Tournament game Thursday night.  Michigan (29-7) trailed by 10 in the opening minutes, struggled to get into rhythm until late in the first half, and never really went on a big run to seize control of the game. Instead, coach John Beilein’s team methodically drew away over a long period of the second half when No. 14 seed Montana (25-8) failed to score, and chugged into a matchup with sixth-seeded Houston _ a last-second winner over San Diego State _ in the second round of the West Region. Michael Oguine and Ahmaad Rorie scored 15 points apiece to lead the Grizzlies. Perhaps the Wolverines were a bit rusty by the long layoff after the Big Ten Tournament, which was moved up a week so that it could be played at Madison Square Garden this year, because it was the plucky Big Sky champions who roared to the game’s first 10 points.

Jets 6, Blackhawks 2 – Connor scores twice, Jets beat Blackhawks 6-2
Kyle Connor scored twice to reach 25 goals this season and the Winnipeg Jets rebounded from a quick deficit for a 6-2 win over the Chicago Blackhawks on Thursday night. Bryan Little and Jack Roslovic each had a goal and an assist as all four Winnipeg lines produced goals. Joel Armia and Paul Stastny also scored.  Connor Hellebuyck turned away 25 shots in his 36th win, increasing his
franchise record for goaltenders. Patrick Laine extended his club-record point streak to 14 games with an assist on Stastny’s goal. The 19-year-old star has 16 goals and eight assists during that span _ most of which came during the Jets’ recent road trip. Brandon Saad and Patrick Sharp scored for Chicago.

Kings 4, Red Wings 1 – Kopitar and Kings hand Red Wings 8th straight loss, 4-1
Anze Kopitar broke a third-period tie with a fluke goal and the Los Angeles Kings beat Detroit 4-1 on Thursday night to hand the Red Wings their eighth consecutive defeat. Los Angeles moved two points in front of idle Anaheim for third place in the Pacific Division. Paul LaDue, Tyler Toffoli and Dustin Brown also scored for the Kings, who are one point behind second-place San Jose. Jonathan Quick made 20 saves as Los Angeles won for the sixth time in nine games. Gustav Nyquist scored for Detroit, and Jared Coreau stopped 18 shots.

Last Night
Toronto Raptors 106, Indiana Pacers 99
Chicago Bulls 111, Memphis Grizzlies 110
Denver Nuggets 120, Detroit Pistons 113

Raptors 106, Pacers 99 – Raptors use late charge to beat Pacers for 10th straight win
DeMar DeRozan scored 24 points and the Raptors earned their 10th consecutive victory by rallying against the Pacers, 106-99. Jonas Valanciunas (YOH’-nuhs val-ehn-CHOO’-nuhs) added 16 points and 17 rebounds for Toronto, which is one away from tying the team’s longest winning streak. The Raptors lead the NBA’s Eastern Conference by five games over Boston, and the Pacers still top the Central Division by a half-game over Cleveland following the Cavaliers’ 113-105 loss at Portland.

Bulls 111, Grizzlies 110 – Bulls hand Grizzlies 19th straight loss on Blakeney’s FTs
Chicago rookie Antonio Blakeney converted two of the three attempts with 1.8 seconds left Thursday night, allowing the Bulls to escape with a 111-110 victory over Memphis, the Grizzlies’ 19th straight loss. Blakeney got to the line after Grizzlies guard Tyreke Evans fouled him near the top of the key with Memphis leading 110-109 with 1.8 seconds remaining.  The rookie from LSU made the first and the third free throws, providing the final margin.  Zach LaVine led the Bulls with 20 points while playing only three quarters, while Bobby Portis scored 17. Denzel Valentine had 15 points, going 5 of 7 from outside the arc.

Nuggets 120, Pistons 113 – Jokic turns in triple-double, Nuggets beat Pistons 120-113
Nikola Jokic had 23 points, 12 rebounds and 10 assists for his eighth triple-double of the season, Jamal Murray added 26 points and the Denver Nuggets’ playoff hopes received a much-needed boost with a 120-113 victory over the Detroit Pistons on Thursday night. Will Barton hit a big basket down the stretch and later knocked down two free throws to help the Nuggets hold off a Pistons team that trailed by as many as 26 points in the third quarter. The Nuggets now hit the road for a pivotal seven-game trip.  The fading Pistons dropped their 11th straight road game despite Andre Drummond scoring 21 points and grabbing 17 rebounds. Blake Griffin added 26 points and nine assists.

The Detroit Lions have bolstered their linebacker group with Christian Jones and Devon Kennard.      Detroit signed both unrestricted free agents on Thursday. Jones had a career-high 84 tackles last season in Chicago and matched career highs with two sacks, a forced fumble and a recovered fumble. Kennard had four sacks last season with the Giants and 9 ½ sacks in his career. The Lions made a major move on the first day of free agency, releasing tight end Eric Ebron. The 2014 first-round pick would have earned $8.25 million this season if he was on the roster past 4 p.m. Wednesday.

FIFA – Chicago drops out of World Cup bid, criticizes FIFA
Chicago, the home of the U.S. Soccer Federation, has dropped out of the North American bid for the 2026 World Cup.  Organizers were to announce their list of bidding cities Thursday. Chicago was the site of the 1994 World Cup opener but declined to be part of the U.S. bid for the 2022 World Cup, which lost to Qatar in a 2010 vote. Matthew McGrath, a spokesman for Chicago Mayor Rahm Emanuel, says in a statement: “FIFA could not provide a basic level of certainty on some major unknowns that put our city and taxpayers at risk. The uncertainty for taxpayers, coupled with FIFA’s inflexibility and unwillingness to negotiate, were clear indications that further pursuit of the bid wasn’t in Chicago’s best interests.” FIFA insists that contracts with host cities contain a provision they be governed under Swiss law and give FIFA the ability to modify agreements at any time.  Vancouver, British Columbia, also dropped out. B.C. Tourism Minister Lisa Beare says provisions add “unknown costs and unknown risks to the B.C. taxpayers.”  Morocco also is bidding. The FIFA Congress votes June 13 in Moscow.
