As students protested school violence across the country Wednesday, the U.S. House was voting to increase security in schools. Congressman Fred Upton tells WSJM News the STOP School Violence Act had its vote, passing 407 to 10. It sets aside $75 million for school safety grants to train teachers and others. Upton says he has appreciated high school students getting involved in civics since the Parkland, Florida shootings.

“I’ve got to say that I think it is constructive,” Upton said. “As I have sat down with a number of students in a number of counties that I represent, I know that they’re very concerned about what happened down in Florida. They had some good ideas on a variety of different topics.”

As far as Wednesday’s school walkouts, Upton said he thinks the kids are “right on” to be concerned about violence in schools. When it comes to gun control, he tells us the bipartisan group of lawmakers who call themselves the Problem Solvers are currently conducting internal polls to see what kind of measures might get the group’s support.
