The Safe Shelter for Domestic Violence in Benton Harbor has launched a social media campaign to get regular people thinking about whether someone they know could be a victim of abuse. Safe Shelter’s Tiffany Griffin tells WSJM News “#IsItYourSister” will go on all month, spreading around examples of what the emotional and mental side of abuse looks like.

“Just because you can’t see bruises doesn’t mean it doesn’t happen,” Griffin said. “This part of domestic abuse is very much soul-crushing to people.”

#IsItYourSister will send out quotes that you might hear from someone being abused that could serve as a clue. Griffin read us an example.

“‘We went to a birthday party for my mom,’” Griffin read. “‘The entire way home we fought because he didn’t like the way my dad’s friend hugged me.’”

Griffin tells us there’s a whole side to abuse that’s just about controlling behavior. The campaign will run all month in the hope of connecting some victims with the Safe Shelter. Anyone who suspects abuse should contact the Safe Shelter. You can find out more right here.
