LeBron James scored 31 points before taking a seat on the bench, Larry Nance Jr. reached career highs with 22 points and 15 rebounds in his first start for Cleveland, and the Cavaliers closed a disappointing five-game homestand on a positive note with a 112-90 win Monday night over the Detroit Pistons, who haven’t won on the road in nearly two months. Blake Griffin scored 25 to lead Detroit, which has lost nine straight away from home. The Pistons haven’t won on the road since Jan. 10. Andre Drummond scored 15 but didn’t reach double-digit rebounds for the first time in 19 games.

Celtics 105, Bulls 89 – Brown scores 21 as Celtics pound Bulls 105-89 without Irving
Jaylen Brown scored 21 points, and the Boston Celtics pounded the Chicago Bulls 105-89 on Monday night even though Kyrie Irving sat out because of a sore left knee.  Even without their All-Star guard, the Celtics took control right from the start and led by as many as 37 en route to their fifth win in six games. Jayson Tatum added 14 points, while Al Horford and Terry Rozier scored 13 apiece for Boston. The Bulls lost for the 14th time in 17 games. Denzel Valentine scored 20 points and nailed four 3-pointers for Chicago.

Pacers 92, Bucks 89 – Bogdanovic leads Pacers over Bucks 92-89
The Pacers got 29 points from Bojan Bogdanovic in a 92-89 win over the Milwaukee Bucks. Bogdanovic also helped Indiana secure the victory by winning a jump ball just before hitting two free throws with six seconds left to close the scoring. Milwaukee All-Star Giannis Antetokounmpo had 18 points and 12 rebounds but missed a potential game-tying 3-point attempt as time expired.

Akron 79, WMU 78 – Cotton helps Akron beat Western Michigan in MAC tourney
Daniel Utomi had 26 points and Freshman Virshon Cotton scored five of his 21 points in the final 45 seconds to help Akron beat Western Michigan 79-78 on Monday night in the Mid-American Conference Tournament.   The 11th-seeded Zips will play No. 3 seed Eastern Michigan in the quarterfinals Thursday.

CMU 81, BGSU 77 – OT – Central Michigan powers past Bowling Green 81-77 in OT
Cecil Williams had 18 points, six rebounds and six assists on Monday night and No. 8 seed Central Michigan dominated overtime for an 81-77 win over ninth-seeded Bowling Green in the first round of the Mid-American Conference Tournament. The Chippewas (19-13) opened the extra period on a 7-0 run and led the rest of the way. Williams made a pair of free throws with 17 seconds left to make it 79-74 and Central Michigan advance to a quarterfinal matchup with No. 1 seed Buffalo.

NCAAMBB – Virginia is unanimous No. 1
Virginia is now the unanimous No. 1 team in The Associated Press men’s basketball poll, receiving all 65 first-place votes after becoming the first ACC team to go 9-0 on the road in league play. The Cavaliers also won their home finale to finish 17-1 in the conference and improve to 28-2 heading into the ACC Tournament. Villanova is second, followed by Xavier, Michigan State and Duke. The Wildcats traded places with Xavier by beating the Musketeers over the weekend, while the Spartans fell two spots after losing to Michigan in the Big Ten semifinals. Gonzaga is sixth, the Wolverines moved up eight spots to seventh, Cincinnati climbed two notches to eighth, Kansas slipped three spots to ninth and Purdue dropped from eighth to 10th.

NCAAWBB – UConn still top team in AP women’s basketball poll
UConn continues to be the unanimous No. 1 pick in the AP women’s basketball poll after running their record to 30-0.  Baylor moved up to second and Louisville third after then-No. 2 Mississippi State lost to South Carolina in the SEC title game. The Bulldogs slipped to fourth. Notre Dame was fifth.

NFL – Forte plans to retire as member of Bears
Matt Forte plans to retire as a member of the Chicago Bears.  The two-time Pro Bowl running back told NBC Sports Chicago on Monday that he will sign a one-day contract so he can officially go out as a Bear. Forte announced last week he is calling it a career after 10 seasons. A second-round draft pick out of Tulane in 2008, Forte spent his first eight seasons with Chicago and his last two with the New York Jets. Forte’s 9,796 yards rushing rank 33rd on the NFL’s career list. He also had 554 receptions, including setting the league record for running backs with 102 catches in 2014, and his 14,468 yards from scrimmage were the most in the NFL the past decade.

  • St. Joe dropped a 45-43 decision to Portage Northern in their Class A District opener.  After the Bears scored the game’s first four points, Northern went on a 13-0 run and eventually led by five after the first quarter. The Huskies maintained that five point lead at the half. They extended the advantage to eight after three quarters and held on in the end.  Cade Shimulunas scored a game high 18 points in the loss for St. Joe. The Huskies got 13 from both Tyler Amos and Michael Lincoln. With the win, Northern improves to 6-15 on the season as they advance to face Portage Central Wednesday night in the District Semi-Finals. St. Joe’s season comes to a close at 16-5.

Mattawan 43, Lakeshore 38

  • Mattawan rallied for a 43-38 win over Lakeshore in their Class A District opener.  The Lancers led by 11 at the half.  After the Wildcats cut into the lead, Lakeshore regained an 11 point advantage in the third quarter.  Mattawan trimmed the deficit to one heading into the fourth and managed to pull it out in the end.  6’10” junior Nolan Foster led Mattawan with a game high 20 points.  Lakeshore got 11 points from Jon Brown. Lakeshore closes the season at 12-8.  Mattawan improves to 15-6 and advances to face Kalamazoo Central Wednesday night in the District Semi-Finals.

  • Benton Harbor’s Shawn Hopkins led the Tigers with 15 points to send his team the District Semifinals with a 79-46 win over Niles.  Carlos Johnson added 14 points and Dennie Brown scored 12.  The Tigers improve to 20-1 and will face Coloma Wednesday at 5:30 p.m.  Niles was led by a game high 18 points from Robert Brown Jr. and Austin Brookins with 12.  Niles finishes the season at 6-15 under coach Todd Pawielski, who steps down as the Vikings coach after 12 seasons.

  • Jaden Croom had 21 points in Brandywine’s 56-51 win over host Watervliet in the opening round of the Class C Districts.  Brandywine improves to 15-6 and will face Hartford Wednesday.

  • Trey Ackerman had 22 points to lead Hartford over New Buffalo 67-58.  The first quarter proved to be the difference as Hartford outscored New Buffalo 17-8 and held on to the 9 point advantage for most of the final 3 quarters.  Aaron Sinclair added 18 for Hartford while Buddy Earls scored 12 and Garrod Johnson had 10.  Seth Margaritis and Ryan Butler each had 19 for New Buffalo.
