Michigan 77, Iowa 71 – OT – No. 15 Michigan overcomes Iowa in OT 77-71 in Big Ten
Duncan Robinson made Michigan’s only field goal in overtime, a go-ahead 3-pointer with 2:15 left, and the 15th-ranked Wolverines survived foul trouble and poor shooting to beat Iowa 77-71 on Thursday to advance to the Big Ten tournament quarterfinals. The fifth-seeded Wolverines (25-7) face fourth-seeded Nebraska on Friday at Madison Square Garden. Michigan was 3 for 19 from 3-point range and Robinson made all of them. His OT 3 put Michigan up 72-70, and the Wolverines made just enough free throws to hold off the Hawkeyes (14-19), who got a basket from Luka Garza on their first overtime possession and not another one. Michigan was 18 for 32 from the free-throw line, but Robinson made two with 10 seconds left to make it 76-71.

Indiana 111, Michigan State 109 – 4 OT – Indiana women go 4 OTs, beat Michigan St. in Big Ten tourney
Amanda Cahill scored 38 points and hit the game-winning free throws with 3.6 seconds left in the fourth overtime and No. 7 Indiana beat tenth-seeded Michigan State 111-109 in the second round of the Big Ten Conference Tournament on Thursday night.  Indiana (17-13) rebounded from a 13-point loss at Iowa that snapped an eight-game win streak and will play No. 2 Maryland in a Friday quarterfinal. It was Michigan State’s first quadruple overtime game, and also longest in both men’s and women’s tournament history.  Cahill was 14-of-20 shooting, made five 3-pointers and 5 of 6 free throws. She also made a layup at the buzzer to force a third overtime.  Tyra Buss added 24 points and Bendu Yeaney 19 for the Hoosiers.  Shay Colley scored a career-high with 27 points to lead Michigan State (17-13). Taya Reimer added a career-best 22 points.  The Spartans trailed 63-58 with 8:27 to play in regulation. Colley hit a running jumper with 25.1 seconds left in regulation to tie it at 74, and hit a shot at the buzzer, but it was ruled late and forced overtime after it was shown that the timekeeper stopped a restarted the clock with time running out.

Michigan 77, Penn State 48 – Thome, Michigan women beat Penn St. in Big Ten Tournament
Hallie Thome had 22 points, on 9-of-12 shooting, and nine rebounds, Katelynn Flaherty hit five 3-pointers and finished with 21 points and Michigan beat Penn State 77-48 on Thursday night in the Big Ten Tournament.  Flaherty, who added five assists, moved into fifth on the school’s career list with 389. The sixth-seeded Wolverines (22-8) will play No. 3 seed Nebraska in the quarterfinals on Friday. Michigan beat the Cornhuskers 69-64 in overtime on Jan. 14, the only other meeting between the teams this season. Flaherty hit three 3s and Thome scored six points in a 17-5 run that made it 32-17 with a minute left in the first half and the Wolverines led by double figures the rest of the way.  Teniya Page led Penn State (16-15) with 12 points. Page broke her own school record for points in a Big Ten Tournament game with 38 points in a first-round win over Illinois on Wednesday.  Michigan made 29 of 59 (49.2 percent) from the field and outrebounded the Lady Lions 43-23.

Sharks 7, Blackhawks 2 – Pavelski scores twice in Sharks’ 7-2 win over Blackhawks
Joe Pavelski scored twice and the San Jose Sharks reached a season high in goals in a 7-2 victory over the Chicago Blackhawks on Thursday night.   Logan Couture, Timo Meier, Kevin LaBanc, Marc-Edouard Vlasic and Barclay Goodrow also scored for the Sharks, who won their second straight at home after dropping three in a row on the road. Artem Anisimov and Nick Schmaltz scored for the Blackhawks, who lost their seventh straight road game while allowing their most goals this season, matching the seven New Jersey scored on Nov. 12.

NHL – NHL ticket drive in Seattle gets off to hot start
Apparently, sports fans in Seattle are ready for the NHL.  The group looking to bring an expansion team to Seattle for the 2020 season said it surpassed 25,000 ticket commitments in two hours after kicking off its season-ticket drive on Thursday. The season-ticket drive is one the steps required by the NHL as part of the expansion process and is meant to gauge the interest in the market. Fans were required to put down a deposit of $500 per ticket or $1,000 for club tickets.

Megan Rapinoe scored in the 17th minute and the U.S. women’s soccer team held on for 1-0 victory over Germany on Wednesday night in a matchup of the world’s top two teams. Germany’s Sara Dabritz got a point-blank opportunity in front of the U.S. goal in the game’s 16th minute but pulled it way right. Less than a minute later, Rapinoe caught up with a long goal kick and her shot went through goalkeeper Almuth Schult’s legs.

Benton Harbor 79, Wyoming 73

  • Fourth quarter free throw shooting lifted Benton Harbor to a 79-73 win at Wyoming Thursday night. In a game that saw several lead changes through three quarters, the Tigers connected on 17 of 19 from the charity stripe in the fourth.  Devan Nichols scored nine of his 18 points from the line in the last eight minutes.  Carlos Johnson opened the game with a 16 point first quarter performance and finished with a game high 26 points for the Tigers.  Menalito McGee scored 19 points in the loss for the Wolves.  With the win, Benton Harbor wraps up the regular season at 19-1.  Wyoming falls to 15-5.

St. Joseph 58, Portage Northern 39

  • Cade Shimulunas was a perfect 4 for 4 from three point range and scored a game high 23 points as St. Joseph closed out the regular season with a 58-39 win at Portage Northern.  Mason Scramlin added another 15 points as the Bears finished the regular season at 16-4 and a perfect 8-0 in the SMAC West Division.  St. Joe will face Portage Northern again on Monday night in the Class A District at Kalamazoo Central at 5:30.   Northern falls to 5-15.

Niles 57, Buchanan 54

  • Chad Barton scored a career high 18 points and added 12 rebounds to give Niles a 57-54 win over Buchanan.  Austin Brookins added 14 points for the Vikings, who will face Benton Harbor in Monday’s first district game at Berrien Springs, while Buchanan plays in the nightcap on Monday against the host Shamrocks. 

Vicksburg 66, South Haven 59

  • South Haven Rams held a 7-point lead over Vicksburg at halftime, but the Bulldogs outscored Rams 26-18 in the third quarter, and went on to a 66-59 win.  South Haven’s Caskadara Smith and Caleb Ford led all scorers with 20 points apiece.  Five Vicksburg players ended up in double figures, with center Kyle Rose leading the charge with a team high 15.  The Rams end their regular season at 9-11, going into tournament play next Wednesday at Berrien Springs.
