Sabres 3, Red Wings 2 – OT – Scandella scores in OT to give Sabres 3-2 win over Red Wings
Marco Scandella scored with a second left in overtime, lifting the Buffalo Sabres to a 3-2 win over the Detroit Red Wings on Thursday night. Justin Abdelkader pulled the Red Wings into a 2-all tie with 1:25 remaining in the third period. They had a chance to win early in overtime, but Tomas Tatar failed to get a shot off on a breakaway. Evander Kane scored a go-ahead wraparound goal late in the second period for Buffalo. Scouts at the game evaluating Kane as a player to possibly acquire had a great view of his 20th goal, which was scored directly in front of them in the press box. Kane told reporters earlier this week he expects to be traded before Monday’s deadline. Rasmus Ristolainen had a goal early in the game to put the Sabres ahead and Robin Lehner finished with 35 saves, including some key ones in the extra period. Jimmy Howard stopped 27 shots for the Red Wings. Detroit’s Jonathan Ericsson tied the game at 1 early in the second period.

Sixers 116, Bulls 115 – Simmons’ late FTs gives 76ers 116-115 win over Bulls
Ben Simmons scored a career-high 32 points, making two free throws with 5.6 seconds left to complete Philadelphia’s rally from five points down in the final minute, and the 76ers beat the Chicago Bulls 116-115. “Stepping up to the line, I knew I was going to knock `em down. You have to have that mentality,” he said. Joel Embiid had 30 points and 13 rebounds, and Simmons added 11 assists and seven rebounds as Philadelphia won its sixth straight and snapped a four-game road losing streak. Bobby Portis had a career-high 38 points and Zach LaVine added 23 for the Bulls, who were 18 for 34 on 3-pointers.  Chicago had a 115-114 lead and the ball with 8 seconds to go before Embiid deflected an inbounds pass to create a turnover. Simmons came up with the ball near halfcourt and was fouled by Denzel Valentine. He made both free throws.

Winter Olympics – PyeongChang 2018

  • Ice Hockey – Women

Canadian defenseman Jocelyne Larocque says she wishes she hadn’t taken off her silver medal almost immediately after it was placed around her neck at the Pyeongchang Olympics.  Larocque issued a statement through Team Canada apologizing to the IOC, International Ice Hockey Federation, the Pyeongchang Olympic Organizing Committee, the Canadian Olympic Committee, Hockey Canada and her teammates and fans.  She says her emotions got the best of her Thursday after a 3-2 shootout loss to the United States and she meant no disrespect.  The general manager of Canada’s national team programs says they expect professionalism and sportsmanship from their players.

  • Figure Skating – Women’s

Alina Zagitova has won the women’s figure skating competition, becoming the first Russian gold medalist at the Pyeongchang Olympics.  The 15-year-old Zagitova edged her friend and training partner Evgenia Medvedeva to end the gold drought for the Olympic Athletes from Russia. That’s the designation given to the nation’s competitors after Russia was officially banned by the IOC for a doping scandal.  Zagitova and Medvedeva tied in the free skate, a rare occurrence, but Zagitova had won the short program Wednesday, so she got gold. Kaetlyn Osmond has won bronze, giving Canada four overall medals in figure skating.

  • Curling – Men’s

The United States will compete for a gold medal in men’s curling after knocking out their Canadian opponents 5-3 in a tense semifinals showdown at the Pyeongchang Olympics. The U.S. victory on Thursday is a remarkable turnaround for a team that hasn’t made the Olympic podium since the 2006 Turin Games, when they won a bronze medal. Just as remarkable was the loss for Canada, which has won the gold medal in men’s curling at the last three Winter Olympics. The Canadian women’s team, meanwhile, didn’t even make the semifinals, despite being the defending world champions. The U.S. will face off against Sweden for the gold. The Swedish team beat Switzerland 9-3 in another semifinals match on Thursday.
