Last Night
Detroit Red Wings 2, Anaheim Ducks 1
Vegas Golden Knights 5, Chicago Blackhawks 2

Red Wings 2, Ducks 1 – Larkin, Nielsen score in Red Wings’ 2-1 win over Ducks
Dylan Larkin and Frans Nielsen scored in the first two periods and the Detroit Red held off the Anaheim Ducks for a 2-1 win on Tuesday night.  Adam Henrique pulled Anaheim within a goal with 3:54 left in the game. The Ducks pulled John Gibson with a minute remaining in regulation to have an extra skater, but couldn’t score to extend the game.  Detroit’s Jimmy Howard held up to intense pressure in the first period stopping 15 shots, and he finished with 32 saves.  Detroit has won two straight, desperately hoping this is the beginning of a push to rally into a wild-card spot in the playoff race.

Golden Knights 5, Blackhawks 2 – Golden Knights net 4 third-period goals to beat Blackhawks
Reilly Smith scored the go-ahead goal in the third period, and the Vegas Golden Knights beat the Chicago Blackhawks 5-2 on Tuesday night. The Golden Knights, who swept the season series 3-0, also got third-period goals from Brad Hunt, David Perron and Tomas Nosek. Ryan Carpenter also scored and Marc-Andre Fleury had 29 saves for Vegas, which snapped a two-game home losing streak. One night after Arizona ended a nine-game losing streak to the last-place Blackhawks, the Western Conference-leading Golden Knights sent Chicago to its season-high seventh straight loss. The Blackhawks have been outscored 29-12 during their losing streak. Tommy Wingels and Alex DeBrincat scored for the Blackhawks, while Jeff Glass stopped 32 shots.

NHL – Seattle group formally files for NHL expansion
A person with direct knowledge of the situation tells The Associated Press the group looking to bring professional hockey to the city of Seattle has formally filed its expansion application with the National Hockey League. The person spoke to the AP on Tuesday on the condition of anonymity because the league was not commenting on the situation. Seattle Mayor Jenny Durkan also tweeted that Oak View Group had submitted the filing with the NHL.  The Oak View Group and its prospective NHL ownership group, led by billionaire David Bonderman and filmmaker Jerry Bruckheimer, submitted the expansion application and $10 million filing fee. The expansion application has been expected for weeks and is the next step in Seattle’s ongoing hope of bringing an NHL franchise to the largest market in the United States without a professional winter sports franchise.  If Seattle is successful in its expansion bid, the new franchise would bring the league to an even 32 teams with 16 in each conference. A new team would also yield a hefty expansion fee _ in the neighborhood of $650 million.

NBA – National Basketball Association
Tonight
Atlanta Hawks at Detroit Pistons, 7 p.m.
Indiana Pacers at Brooklyn Nets, 7:30 p.m.
Toronto Raptors at Chicago Bulls, 8 p.m.

MLB – Darvis, Cubs finalize 6-year contract
Yu Darvish and the Chicago Cubs have finalized their six-year, $126 million contract, by far the largest deal in a slow-moving free agent market. Darvish joins a rotation that includes Jon Lester, Kyle Hendricks, Jose Quintana and Tyler Chatwood, who agreed to a three-year, $38 million package in December. The 31-year-old Darvish finished last season with the Dodgers, helping them knock out the defending champion Cubs in the playoffs to reach the World Series. The four-time All-Star is expected to take the rotation spot of Jake Arrieta (ar-ee-EH’-tuh), who became a free agent.

NFL – Reich embraces new role with Colts as coaching backup plan
Frank Reich has been introduced as the Indianapolis Colts new head coach. The former Philadelphia Eagles’ offensive coordinator accepted the job two days earlier then signed his contract at the home of team owner Jim Irsay later that night. The announcement came exactly one week after the Colts had agreed to a deal with New England Patriots offensive coordinator Josh McDaniels. Eight hours later, McDaniels backed out of the deal and decided to remain with the Pats in the same job.

NCAAFB – Notre Dame Loses Vacated Wins Appeal
The NCAA has denied Notre Dame’s appeal of a decision to vacate 21 victories because of academic misconduct, including all 12 wins from the school’s 2012 national championship game run.  In a letter to Notre Dame alumni, University President Fr. John Jenkins criticized the decision, saying the penalty was unprecedented considering who was involved in the misconduct, and the school was being punished for rigorously enforcing its honor code. He called the ruling unfair, referencing the recent North Carolina case in which the NCAA did not punish the school after an investigation of athletes taking irregular courses.  Notre Dame agreed to accept certain NCAA findings and acknowledged cheating involving several football players and a student athletic trainer, but appealed only the penalty that vacated victories. The NCAA stripped Notre Dame of the 21 victories, fined the school $5,000 and placed the school on one years’ probation in November 2016 after finding academic misconduct orchestrated by a student athletic trainer.

2018 Winter Olympics – PyeongChang

  • Snowboarding – Men’s Halfpipe

Snowboarder Shaun White has won America’s 100th Winter Olympic gold medal, throwing down a spectacular final run in the men’s halfpipe.   The United States is only the second country to win 100 winter golds. It trails Norway, which started Wednesday with 121. Germany is third with 92. White’s gold was the fourth for the U.S. in Pyeongchang. The others came from
snowboarders Red Gerard, Jamie Anderson and Chloe Kim. America has won 14 gold medals in snowboarding since its Olympic debut in 1998, the most of any country. This is White’s third gold medal and first since 2010. He ranks third among
Americans in individual winter gold medals, trailing only speedskaters Bonnie Blair and Eric Heiden, who have five each.

  • Alpine Skiing

Mikaela Shiffrin’s debut at the wind-blown Pyeongchang Olympics has been postponed a second time.  Plans to run the slalom, with Shiffrin defending her title from 2014, have now been shelved, one hour after the original scheduled start at 10:15 a.m. South Korea time. There had been three delays in hope of waiting out the strong gusts. Now the race will be held Friday instead. Shiffrin already had her giant slalom race postponed Monday at blustery Yongpyong. That race was moved to a Thursday slot, when winds are forecast to ease.   That creates a busy program for the next two days: Two women’s technical races at Yongpyong and two men’s speed races at Jeongseon, 30 miles (50 kilometers) away.
