South Haven Area Emergency Services held cold water rescue drills off the South Haven piers on Tuesday. Deputy Chief Tony Marsala tells WSJM News why the training is needed.

“Any situation that would involve someone being in the water, it can be out on Lake Michigan or we do have some inland ponds and lakes in our area,” Marsala said.

The rescue crews train in specially-designed head to toe suits that not only keep personnel warm but also buoyant. Chief Marsala warns everyone to keep off the ice. It may appear thick and sturdy, but he says the next step you take may not be, and you could fall through.
