NBA – Cavs trade Wade to Miami, overhaul roster
Cleveland Cavaliers fans will have to buy programs to identify the overhauled team. About half the roster was turned over before today’s NBA trade deadline, with guards Isaiah Thomas, Dwyane Wade and Derrick Rose among six players and two draft picks dealt by the Cavs. Thomas, forward Channing Frye and a first-round pick went to the Lakers for guard Jordan Clarkson and forward Larry Nance. Thomas had been a disappointment after being acquired from Boston for Kyrie Irving, averaging 14.7 points and 4.5 assists after missing the team’s first 36 games with an injury.  Wade was shipped back to Miami for a protected second-round selection, two years after leaving the Heat. The 36-year-old Wade is scoring a career-low 11.2 points a game this season after spending last year with the Bulls. He played his first 13 NBA seasons with the Heat, averaging 23.7 points and 5.6 assists. The Cavs also were part of a three-team deal that sends Rose and forward Jae Crowder to the Jazz for forward Rodney Hood and brings guard George Hill to Cleveland from Sacramento for guard Iman Shumpert. Hood may have the biggest upside among the players acquired by Cleveland, averaging 16.8 points in his fourth NBA season.

NBA – Pistons acquire Ennis from Memphis for Johnson, 2nd-rounder
The Detroit Pistons and Memphis Grizzlies have agreed to a trade sending James Ennis to the Pistons for Brice Johnson and a 2022 second-round draft pick.  The Pistons announced the deal Thursday night. Detroit also acquired Jameer Nelson from Chicago on Thursday. It’s been a busy couple of weeks for the Pistons, who landed star forward Blake Griffin last week in a trade with the Los Angeles Clippers. Detroit acquired Johnson and Willie Reed in that deal along with Griffin, but now the Pistons are moving on without Reed and Johnson. Reed was traded in the deal for Nelson. The 6-foot-7 Ennis has averaged 6.9 points in 45 games this season.

NBA – Trail Blazers send Vonleh to Bulls for Rakovic
A person with knowledge of the situation says the Portland Trail Blazers have traded forward Noah Vonleh to the Chicago Bulls in exchange for Milovan Rakovic.  The person spoke to The Associated Press on the condition of anonymity because the move at Thursday deadline had not formally announced. The trade was first reported by ESPN.  Vonleh, the No. 9 overall pick by Charlotte in the 2014 NBA draft, averaged 3.6 points and 5.1 rebounds in 33 games this season, including 12 starts. For his career, Vonleh has averaged 3.9 points and 4.5 rebounds.

NBA – Bulls G Dunn out of concussion protocol
Bulls guard Kris Dunn is out of concussion protocol, although he will miss two more games. Dunn was averaging 13.7 points and 6.4 assists before missing Chicago’s last eight games. The Bulls have dropped their last seven games.

Tyler Seguin scored twice, Ben Bishop made 37 saves and the Dallas Stars beat the fading Chicago Blackhawks 4-2 on Thursday night for their fourth straight win. Tyler Pitlick connected with 4.5 seconds left in second period and Stephen Johns also scored for the Stars, who strengthened their hold on the top wild card in the Western Conference and remained one point behind third-place St. Louis in the Central Division.  Jonathan Toews and Artem Anisimov scored for Chicago, which lost its fourth straight overall and sixth straight at home. Anton Forsberg blocked 26 shots.

NFL – Foles, Wentz, Kelce give thanks to Eagles fans
The Super Bowl champion Philadelphia Eagles concluded their raucous, emotional victory rally by giving props to their fans.  Super Bowl MVP Nick Foles and injured quarterback Carson Wentz thanked the roaring crowds from the “Rocky” steps at the art museum. Jason Kelce gave a rousing lecture on the meaning of the word underdog for Philadelphia. Malcolm Jenkins also hit the underdog theme: “They doubted us as players, they doubted us as a team.”  It was a passionate defense of the coach and general manager and went through all the criticism they have faced over the years.

NFL – Garoppolo to stay with 49ers
Jimmy Garoppolo signed a record-breaking, five-year contract with the San Francisco 49ers that will pay him a reported $137.5 million. The package keeps him off the free-agent market next month without forcing the team to use the one-year franchise tag. San Francisco acquired Garoppolo from New England before the trade deadline for a 2018 second-round pick. The Niners were 1-10 and in contention for the No. 1 pick in the draft until he led the team to a season-ending, five-game winning streak.

Katelynn Flaherty scored 36 points, making nine 3-pointers, and No. 21 Michigan snapped a two-game skid with an 84-63 victory over Northwestern on Thursday night. Flaherty made five 3-pointers in scoring 15 points in the second quarter when the Wolverines (20-6, 9-4) outscored the Wildcats 22-9 to take a 40-24 halftime lead. Northwestern got within eight for 38 seconds early in the fourth quarter before Hallie Thome scored five straight points to re-establish the double-digit lead. Flaherty, who made 9 of 16 from behind the arc, was two points shy and one 3-pointer shy of career highs. Thome added 25 points and Jullian Dunston grabbed 12 rebounds to surpass 800 career rebounds. Michigan has posted its seventh straight 20-win season, a school record.  Jordan Hamilton had four 3-pointers and 21 points for Northwestern (9-16, 2-9), which has lost six straight. Lindsey Pulliam added 13 points.

(10) Maryland 76, Michigan State 68 – Kaila Charles helps No. 10 Maryland beat Michigan State
Kaila Charles had 19 points and 11 rebounds to help No. 10 Maryland beat Michigan State 76-68 on Thursday night.  Maryland (21-3, 10-1 Big Ten) won its sixth straight and avenged an 82-68 home loss to Michigan State on Jan. 11.  Stephanie Jones and Kristen Confoy each had 14 points, and Channise Lewis and Eleanna Christinaki added 11 each. NCAAFB – Davie punished following investigation
The University of New Mexico suspended head football coach Bob Davie on Thursday for 30 days without pay.  The punishment follows multiple investigations that examined whether he and coaching staff interfered with criminal investigations or misconduct cases involving players. An initial investigation requested by university officials had found through confidential interviews with players that Davie had told them in an all-team meeting to “get some dirt” on a student who had reported that a player had raped her.

NCAAFB – New deals for Badgers football coaches
The University of Wisconsin System Board of Regents has approved new contracts for football coach Paul Chryst (krihst), offensive coordinator Joe Rudolph and defensive coordinator Jim Leonhard.  Terms were not disclosed, but Chryst was due to make $3.3 million this year after guiding the Badgers to a school-record 13 victories.  Wisconsin is 34-7 in three seasons under Chryst, including the program’s first 12-0 start last year.

2018 Winter Olympics

  • Russia Doping ban upheld

The Court of Arbitration for Sport has ruled that 45 Russian athletes who were excluded from the Pyeongchang Olympics over doping concerns can’t compete.  A vetting process was designed to exclude Russian athletes from the games if IOC officials weren’t sure they were clean, even if they hadn’t been banned for doping. The games will still include 168 Russians who have been invited as “Olympic Athletes from Russia,” competing in neutral uniforms under the Olympic flag.

  • USA Mixed doubles curling team loses in rare way

Despite holding a lead heading into the final round of curling’s mixed doubles match, the U.S. lost to reigning world champion Switzerland after the Swiss managed something exceedingly unusual: a perfect score known as a six-ender.  How rare is a six-ender?  Think of it as a perfect game in baseball.  Although Switzerland was behind by one point entering the final round, Jenny Perret and Martin Rios had an advantage: the right to throw the final stone of the game. They managed to get their first five stones into the house. They then promptly knocked the Americans’ lone rock out of the house. According to the World Curling Federation, no curling team has ever managed a perfect score at the Olympics.

  • Figure Skating

Meagan Duhamel and Eric Radford made up for teammate Patrick Chan’s shaky short program to give Team Canada the lead after the opening day of figure skating’s team competition.  The U.S. team was second, followed closely by Japan and the Olympic Athletes of Russia.  Duhamel and Radford scored 76.57 points in their program to finish behind Evgenia Tarasova and Vladimir Morozov, whose season-best 80.92 points dazzled a crowd full of Russian fans. But not even that big number could make up for teammate Mikhail Kolyada’s poor short program.  Nathan Chen was wobbly for the Americans, but the pairs team of Alexa Scimeca Knierim and Chris Knierim bailed him out with a dazzling performance set to music from “Moulin Rouge!”  The team competition resumes Sunday with the ice dance and ladies short programs.

  • USOC: No plans for American bid for 2026 Olympics

The chairman of the U.S. Olympic Committee says there will be no American bid for the 2026 Winter Games but the USOC will keep its options open for 2030.  Larry Probst said the financial logistics of hosting the Winter Olympics two years before Los Angeles hosts the Summer Games in 2028 are too complex.  There is a possibility the IOC could award 2026 and 2030 together, and Probst said if that’s the case, the USOC is prepared to be part of the process.  Earlier this week, Salt Lake City said it would try to become the American candidate for a 2030 bid; Denver is also considering a bid.
