NFL – Lions hire Matt Patricia as coach, eyeing the Patriot Way
The Detroit Lions have hired Matt Patricia of the New England Patriots as their coach.  The expected hiring of the defensive coordinator comes a day after the Patriots lost to the Philadelphia Eagles in the Super Bowl. Lions general manager Bob Quinn made the move Monday, reuniting with someone he worked with in New England for more than a decade. Patricia was the Patriots’ defensive coordinator for six seasons, ending with a Super Bowl loss in which his unit gave up 41 points and 538 yards. He was on Bill Belichick’s staff for 14 seasons, overlapping with Quinn for many years. Quinn was a part of the Patriots’ personnel department for 16 years before Detroit gave him his first shot to be an NFL GM. Patricia cuts a distinctive figure on the sideline, with a bushy beard, backward ball cap and a pencil above his right ear.

NFL – Man held in NFL player’s death had BAC of 0.239, was deported twice
A man being held in a suspected drunken-driving crash that killed Indianapolis Colts linebacker Edwin Jackson and his Uber driver had a blood-alcohol level nearly three times Indiana’s legal limit immediately after Sunday’s deadly crash. A probable cause affidavit filed Sunday in Marion Superior Court under the first name Manuel Orrego-Savala gave police states that a breath test administered at the scene found the 37-year-old man’s blood-alcohol content was 0.239 percent. Indiana’s legal limit is 0.08 percent. Two vials of blood were later drawn from Orrego-Savala for testing. He remains jailed and prosecutors are weighing potential criminal charges against him in the crash that killed the 26-year-old Jackson and Jeffrey Monroe of Avon, Indiana. State Police say Orrego-Savala is a citizen of Guatemala who’s been deported twice from the U.S.

Pistons 111, Blazers 91 – Pistons win 4th straight in 111-91 rout of Portland
Andre Drummond had 17 points and 17 rebounds, and the Detroit Pistons beat the Portland Trail Blazers 111-91 on Monday night for their fourth straight victory.   Detroit has won three in a row with Blake Griffin in the lineup after acquiring him in a trade last week. The victory Monday pulled the Pistons back to .500 and even with Philadelphia for the final playoff spot in the Eastern Conference.  Griffin had 21 points, nine rebounds and six assists, and did a good bit of his offensive damage from the perimeter, making three 3-pointers. Anthony Tolliver added 15 points for Detroit, and Reggie Bullock and Langston Galloway contributed 13 apiece. Damian Lillard scored 20 points and C.J. McCollum added 14 for the Blazers

Wizards 111, Pacers 102 – Wizards beat Pacers 111-102, win 5th straight without Wall
All-Star guard Bradley Beal scored 21 points and Kelly Oubre Jr. had 15 on Monday night to help the Washington Wizards hold on for a 111-102 victory over the Indiana Pacers. The Wizards have won five straight overall, all without John Wall, and four in a row over the Pacers.  Bojan Bogdanovic scored 29 points for the Pacers, trying to spur a fourth-quarter rally. Joe Young added 17 as Indiana’s six-game home winning streak ended. Without starting guards Victor Oladipo (illness) and Darren Collison (left knee surgery), the Pacers were out of sync all night.

Kings 104, Bulls 98 – Kings score 9 in 1st, rally to beat Bulls 104-98
Bogdan Bogdanovic made a tiebreaking 3-pointer with 52 seconds remaining and the Sacramento Kings overcame a dismal start with a strong finish to beat the Chicago Bulls 104-98 on Monday night. The Kings scored just nine points in the first quarter, trailed by as many as 21 and were down by seven with 10 minutes left before rallying to complete a season sweep of the Bulls.  After Zach LaVine’s follow shot tied it at 93 with less than 4 minutes left, Sacramento’s Buddy Hield and Chicago’s Bobby Portis exchanged 3-pointers. Bogdanovic then hit the go-ahead bucket for the Kings on an uncontested shot beyond the arc.  Bogdanovic had 15 points, Hill scored 14 and Garrett Temple added 12 for Sacramento.  LaVine scored 27 points and Justin Holiday had 20 for Chicago. The Bulls, who lost center Robin Lopez to an ejection in the first half, have dropped seven
straight.

Former sports doctor sentenced to 40 to 125 years in prison
The former sports doctor whose serial sexual abuse of girls and young women upended the gymnastics world was sentenced Monday to a third prison term of 40 to 125 years for molesting young athletes at an elite Michigan training center. Larry Nassar listened to dozens of victims for two days last week and was almost attacked by a man whose three daughters said they were abused. His final sentence comes after he pleaded guilty to penetrating young athletes with ungloved hands when they sought treatment for injuries at Twistars, a gymnastics club that was run by a 2012 U.S. Olympic coach.  The sentence is largely symbolic because the 54-year-old is already assured of spending the rest of his life in prison. Before serving either of his two state sentences, he must first serve 60 years in federal prison for child pornography crimes. In a brief statement before he was sentenced, Nassar attempted to apologize to his victims, saying “It’s impossible to convey the breadth and depth of how sorry I am to each and every one.”
