Eagles 41, Patriots 33 – Nick Foles leads Eagles to first Super Bowl title over Pats
Nick Foles went back-and-forth with Tom Brady and the defense came through with a turnover when they needed a stop.  The Philadelphia Eagles are Super Bowl champions for the first time in franchise history thanks to a backup quarterback who had another spectacular game and a strip-sack by Brandon Graham after the defense let Brady have his way for most of Sunday night. Foles tossed an 11-yard touchdown pass to Zach Ertz with 2:21 left to give Philadelphia a 38-33 lead, but Brady had a chance to lead another comeback. He had thrown TD passes on three straight second-half possessions and picked the NFL’s fourth-ranked defense apart to help New England overcome double-digit deficits. But Graham pushed through a blocker, hit Brady, knocked the ball loose and rookie Derek Barnett recovered. The turnover _ New England’s first _ led to a field goal that made it 41-33. Brady and the Patriots had one final chance, starting from their 9 with 58 seconds left. But a desperation pass into the end zone fell incomplete and set off a wild celebration in a crowd filled with long-suffering Eagles fans who have desperately waited for a championship since 1960.

NFL – Philadelphians take to the streets to celebrate Super Bowl
The rain and hail that pelted Philadelphia for much of the day dissipated just as people across the city spilled out of sports bars, apartments and houses. They all had one destination: Broad Street.  It was time for a celebration 58 years in the making.  On Sunday evening, just as Nick Foles led the Philadelphia Eagles to a surprise Super Bowl victory over the New England Patriots in Minneapolis, the scene more than 1,000 miles away in Philly was jubilation and pandemonium. Fireworks were set off. Car horns blared. And Philadelphians young and old descended on Broad Street, the iconic thoroughfare that will soon host a parade to commemorate the city’s first major pro sports championship since the Phillies won the 2008 World Series.

NFL – Colts: Linebacker Edwin Jackson among 2 killed on highway
The Indianapolis Colts say linebacker Edwin Jackson was one of two men killed when a suspected drunken driver struck them as they stood outside their car along a highway in Indianapolis. The Colts said in a statement Sunday that the team is “heartbroken” by Jackson’s death. The statement says the 26-year-old “was loved by all in the Colts organization.” State police identified the victims as Jackson and 54-year-old Jeffrey Monroe, of Avon, Indiana. Authorities say the driver that struck them before dawn on Sunday tried to flee on foot but was quickly captured. Toxicology results are pending.

NBA – AP source: Struggling Cavs not planning to fire coach Lue
A person with direct knowledge of the situation says the Cleveland Cavaliers have no plans to fire coach Tyronn Lue despite the team’s recent slide. The status of Lue, the only coach to win a championship with a Cleveland team since 1964, came into question following Saturday night’s 32-point home loss to Houston. However, Lue’s job isn’t in danger because of the need for “keeping continuity” at a challenging time, according to the person who spoke to The Associated Press on condition of anonymity Sunday because of the sensitive nature of the situation.  ESPN first reported that Lue’s job wasn’t in jeopardy.  Cleveland has lost 12 of 18 and has been blown out several times in the span. Lue has been with the Cavaliers since 2016, when he replaced David Blatt midway through the season. Lue took over and guided the Cavs to a win over Golden State in the NBA Finals.

Golf – PGA – Woodland wins in OT
Gary Woodland parred the first playoff hole to beat Chez Reavie and win the PGA’s Waste Management Phoenix Open. Woodland birdied three of the last four holes of regulation for a 7-under 64, the best round of the day. He was 18 under for the tournament. Reavie made a 20-foot birdie putt on the par-4 18th to force the PGA Tour’s fourth straight playoff and the event’s third overtime finish in a row. Brendan Steele and Ollie Schniederjans tied for third at 15 under, one shot in front of Phil Mickelson, Matt Kuchar, Chesson Hadley and Bryson DeChambeau.

Skiing – Vonn records 81st win ahead of Olympics
Vonn claimed her 81st career victory by capturing the final women’s World Cup downhill in Germany before the Pyeongchang Olympics. It was the American’s third straight triumph in the discipline after winning on the same hill the day before and in Cortina d’Ampezzo, Italy, two weeks ago. Vonn’s American teammate Stacey Cook crashed and was taken off the hill on a sled, but the U.S. ski team says she “is OK.” Another teammate, Jacqueline Wiles, damaged her left knee in a crash Saturday and was ruled out of the Olympics.

Michigan State faculty moving ahead with no-confidence vote
Michigan State University faculty are moving ahead with a motion to hold a no-confidence vote on the school’s board of trustees. The vote was in response to the board’s decision to hire former Gov. John Engler as interim president. Members of the university’s Academic Congress overwhelmingly approved a measure Saturday to hold the vote at the Faculty Senate’s next meeting. If that vote passes, faculty would call on the trustees to step down immediately.  Faculty members say the board rushed to appoint Engler and they criticized his lack of academic experience. Engler was hired as interim president last Wednesday after longtime President Lou Anna Simon resigned Jan. 24. Simon’s decision came amid a growing outcry over the university’s handling of the sex assault scandal involving former university sports doctor Larry Nassar.
