Pistons 104, Grizzlies 102 – Griffin scores 24 in Detroit’s 104-102 win over Memphis
Blake Griffin had 24 points and 10 rebounds in his debut for Detroit, and the Pistons edged the Memphis Grizzlies 104-102 on Thursday night. Griffin was impressive throughout his first game for the Pistons since they traded for him earlier this week. His teammates looked uncertain at times, but Detroit was able to outlast a Memphis team that is without Tyreke Evans and Mike Conley. Griffin was the first Detroit starter announced before the game and received a big hand from the crowd. The arena still didn’t appear full _ the Pistons have struggled with attendance for several years _ but the atmosphere was lively, especially during the tight finish. Griffin’s first points came when he powered to the basket and made a shot off the glass. He lobbed a nice alley-oop to All-Star Andre Drummond in the second quarter, although that duo didn’t look totally in rhythm together. Drummond had 14 points and 15 rebounds but sat out some of the crucial possessions late..

NBA – Pelicans acquire Mirotic from Bulls
The New Orleans Pelicans have acquired forward Nikola Mirotic and a second-round draft pick from the Chicago Bulls for center Omer Asik, guards Jameer Nelson and Tony Allen, and a future first-round pick. The deal comes less than a week after New Orleans lost All-Star DeMarcus Cousins for the season to a left Achilles tear. Mirotic has averaged 16.8 points and 6.4 rebounds per game since missing the first 23 games this season with two broken bones in his face stemming from a fight in practice with Bobby Portis.

Daniel Sedin and Bo Horvat also scored for the Canucks. Troy Stecher added two assists, and Vancouver won for the fifth time in eight games after a 2-11-3 stretch.  The Canucks also won back-to-back games on home ice for the second time this season.  Nick Schmaltz and Alex DeBrincat scored for Chicago, which ended a two-game winning streak. Duncan Keith had two assists. Chicago has not won three straight games since a five-game streak Dec. 8-17. Jacob Markstrom stopped 26 shots for Vancouver. MLB – All 30 MLB ballparks to have expanded netting by opening day
All 30 major league ballparks will have expanded protective netting that reaches to at least the far ends of each dugout by opening day.  Major League Baseball made the announcement Thursday ahead of an owners’ meeting later in the day. MLB issued recommendations for protective netting or screens in December 2015, encouraging teams to have it in place between the ends of the dugouts closest to home plate. The push for an expansion increased last year after a series of spectator injuries.  A boy was struck on the head by a portion of Chris Carter’s broken bat at Yankee Stadium on May 25, and a fan sitting beyond the first-base dugout was hit by a 105 mph foul ball off the bat of Aaron Judge on July 25. A young girl was injured by a 105 mph foul ball off the bat of Todd Frazier on Sept. 20 and was hospitalized.

MLB – MLB would drop 2018 pitch clock if players agree to phase-in
Major League Baseball has offered to drop its proposal for a pitch clock this year and also would go without one in 2019 if the average time of a nine-inning game drops to at least 2 hours, 55 minutes this season. Speaking at the end of a quarterly owners meeting, baseball Commissioner Rob Manfred said Thursday owners had authorized him to implement management’s proposal from last offseason, which calls for a 20-second pitch clock, if an agreement cannot be reached with the players’ association. Management has proposed a deal that would phase in new pace-of-game rules over the next three seasons Manfred says the next 10 days are important in negotiations. Training camps open in mid-February. The union has resisted a pitch clock, which has been used at Triple-A and Double-A for three seasons.
