Pacers 105, Grizzlies 101 – Turner leads Pacers past Grizzlies 105-101 for 3rd straight
Myles Turner had 15 points and 11 rebounds, and the Indiana Pacers won their third straight game with a 105-101 victory over the Memphis Grizzlies on Wednesday night.  Turner gave the Pacers a 102-101 lead by hitting two free throws with 34 seconds left.  With two seconds remaining, Wayne Selden missed a floater in the lane that would have given Memphis the lead. Indiana came up with the rebound and sealed it at the foul line with less than a second left.  All five Pacers starters scored in double digits. Bojan Bogdanovic and Darren Collison each had 21 points, Victor Oladipo added 13 and Thaddeus Young had 10.

Blazers 124, Bulls 108 – McCollum scores 50 in 3 quarters, Blazers beat Bulls 124-108
CJ McCollum scored a franchise-record 28 points in the first quarter and finished with a career-high 50 through three periods before heading to the bench, and the Portland Trail Blazers took advantage of the short-handed Chicago Bulls for a 124-108 victory Wednesday night.  McCollum’s 28 points in the opening quarter were the most in the NBA this season. His final tally was nine points shy of the team record set by Damian Lillard last season.  Lillard also sat out the final period after adding 13 points and seven assists for the Blazers, who led by as many as 29. It was Portland’s fourth straight win overall, a season high, and the club’s eighth in a row at home.     Zach LaVine had a season-best 23 points in Chicago’s fifth consecutive loss.  The Bulls decided to sit forward Nikola Mirotic while he reportedly seeks a trade.

NBA – Pistons’ Blake Griffin says he wants to be where he’s wanted
Blake Griffin has arrived in Detroit and on Wednesday the Pistons introduced him and the two other players they received from the Los Angeles Clippers in the blockbuster deal earlier this week. Griffin, Brice Johnson and Willie Reed should be available to play Thursday night when Detroit hosts the Memphis Grizzlies, and that’s when the idea of Griffin in a different uniform will really become a reality.  The Pistons sent Tobias Harris, Avery Bradley, Boban Marjanovic and two draft picks to the Clippers. The trade came seven months after Griffin signed a $171 million, five-year contract to stay with Los Angeles – a fact that’s been duly noted. LeBron James described the deal as ”unfortunate” – pointing out that players are described as disloyal for leaving teams, but franchises don’t necessarily face the same criticism when trading players who have stayed committed to them.  When asked if he regretted not having a no-trade clause, Griffin kept the focus on his future with his new team.  ”I want to play for an organization that wants me to play there,” Griffin said. ”This is where I want to be, and this is the place that wants me.”

Gustav Nyquist, Andreas Athanasiou, Tomas Tatar and Abdelkader scored in the shootout for Detroit, while Joe Pavelski, Logan Couture and Chris Tierney scored for the Sharks.  The Red Wings had a season-high 44 shots.

NFL – Banged up players as Pats, Iggles prep for Super Bowl
As expected, Patriots tight end Rob Gronkowski remains in the concussion protocol for New England’s first Super Bowl practice in Minnesota today. Patriots coach Bill Belichick said Gronkowski took part in non-contact drills and is “working his way back.”  Quarterback Tom Brady practiced fully, wearing black tape on his injured right hand. Everyone except defensive tackle Tim Jernigan participated in Eagles practice, according to a pool report. Jernigan has an illness that coach Doug Pederson said is a “24-hour deal.”

NFL – Fox gets Thursday night football for 5 years
Fox and the NFL have agreed to a five-year deal for Thursday night football games.  Those games previously were televised by CBS and NBC, two of the league’s other network partners. But Fox announced Wednesday that it will televise 11 games between Weeks 4 and 15, with simulcasts on NFL Network and Fox Deportes. Fox, which has the Sunday NFC package, will produce the games.

NFL – Goodell says focus will be on replay, rule book
Commissioner Roger Goodell says the NFL will emphasize ways to cut down on longer replay reviews while focusing on the rule book as a way to improve officiating. Goodell said Wednesday in his annual Super Bowl address that the focus on rules will include ways to refine the catch rule, which has been widely criticized. The commissioner said the focus for reviews will be on “making sure it doesn’t interrupt the flow of the game.”

Olympics – US confident in Olympics security despite NKorea tensions
The United States says it’s not aware of any specific threat to the upcoming Winter Olympics in South Korea and is confident that American athletes, coaches and spectators will be safe, despite nuclear tensions with North Korea. State Department officials overseeing security for the U.S. Olympic team said Wednesday that they had planned for all threat contingencies in preparation for the Pyeongchang Games that begin next week.  They said roughly 100 Diplomatic Security agents would be deployed to Seoul and two sites in Pyeongchang. That’s about the same as have been sent to previous Olympics. The U.S. Olympic delegation will number about 275 and an estimated 60,000 Americans are expected to attend the games.

Olympics – Simone Biles waiting to hear from USOC about sexual abuse
Simone Biles says she’s met the new president of USA Gymnastics but hasn’t heard from the U.S. Olympic Committee regarding the Larry Nassar sexual abuse scandal. The four-time gold medalist at the Rio Olympics is among those who say they were sexually abused by Nassar, a former team doctor for the governing body for American gymnastics.  Biles says USA Gymnastics President Kerry Perry flew to meet her in Texas, where she’s training for the 2020 Tokyo Games. She says the USOC hasn’t reached out. Biles said Wednesday there’s “still a lot of work that needs to be done, like
independent investigations. So they can ensure this never happens in any sport again.” Nassar already has been sentenced to 60 years in prison on child pornography charges and 40 to 175 years for abusing young women and girls while working at Michigan State University. He’s also facing sentencing for molesting gymnasts at an elite club in Lansing, Michigan.

Disgraced sports doctor faces another wave of victims
Another wave of victims confronted disgraced former gymnastics doctor Larry Nassar at his third and final sentencing hearing Wednesday, this time about sexual abuse at an elite Michigan club run by an Olympic coach. The judge presiding over the case said the number of people who allege they were abused by Nassar has climbed to 265. That total includes 150-plus victims who offered statements at a different hearing last week, as well as scores of new ones who are expected to speak over the next few days. Nassar faces another long prison sentence on top of the two he has already received.
