Pistons 125, Cavaliers 114 – Love breaks hand in Cavaliers’ 125-114 loss to Detroit
Andre Drummond had 21 points and 22 rebounds, and the short-handed Detroit Pistons beat Cleveland 125-114 on Tuesday night after the Cavaliers lost Kevin Love to a potentially season-altering hand injury.  Love exited in the first quarter with a broken left hand, and the Pistons took advantage of his absence, snapping an eight-game losing streak despite a roster that was depleted by their blockbuster trade for Blake Griffin.  Detroit gave up three players to get Griffin, and neither he nor the other two players the Pistons received in return were available against Cleveland. Drummond _ whose own status was in question because of an illness _ had a huge game, and Stanley Johnson added a career-high 26 points. Reggie Bullock added 22 points for the Pistons, and Anthony Tolliver scored 20. LeBron James scored 21 points for the Cavs, but Cleveland was listless early and outplayed late _ and the result felt secondary to Love’s health.

NBA – Drummond added to All-Star game in place of injured Wall
Detroit Pistons center Andre Drummond has been added to the NBA All-Star Game, replacing injured Washington guard John Wall.  The Pistons announced Drummond’s selection Tuesday night.  Drummond is an All-Star for the second time. He also represented the Pistons in 2016. He entered Tuesday night’s game against Cleveland averaging 14.7 points and 15.1 rebounds. After Drummond was initially left out of this year’s All-Star game, he posted to his Twitter account: “Guess I gotta start doing back flips after every point I score to get attention around here!”

MSU – Nassar to face another sentence, victims in return to court
Sports doctor Larry Nassar’s return to court to face another prison sentence for molesting gymnasts could unfold much the same as a hearing last week in another Michigan county. Judge Janice Cunningham has set aside several days for roughly 60 people who want to confront Nassar or have their statement read in court. This time Nassar is to be confronted by gymnasts from an elite Michigan club run by an Olympic coach. Last week Nassar was sentenced to 40 to 175 years in prison.  The hearing starting Wednesday in Eaton County centers on his assaults at Twistars, a Lansing-area gymnastics club that was run by 2012 Olympic coach John Geddert. Nassar admits penetrating three girls with his hands when he was supposed to be treating them for injuries.

MLB – MLB asks All-Star 11th start with runner on 2nd
A runner would be put on second base at the start of the 11th inning of the All-Star Game and each additional inning, according to the latest pace-of-game proposal by Major League Baseball. The experiment also would be used in the 10th inning of spring training games, according to the Jan. 9 proposal obtained by The Associated Press. Spring training games would be capped at 10 innings. Concerned about injuries in games that don’t count, the players’ association isn’t expected to oppose the concept. MLB isn’t considering using the rule in any games that count. Baseball experimented with the rule last year at the rookie level Gulf Coast and Arizona leagues.

Native Americans: Benching Wahoo step in right direction
Native American groups say they’ll continue to push for changes in sports imagery they see as racist after the Cleveland Indians decided to remove the Chief Wahoo logo from uniforms starting next year.  Jacqueline Pata is the executive director of the National Congress of American Indians. She says the decision by the Indians and Major League Baseball may put some pressure on schools and sports teams that have been rejecting change. Mostly, she’s counting on growing public sentiment that names like the Braves, Indians, Chiefs, Blackhawks and Redskins are racist and dehumanizing. While Cleveland players won’t don Chief Wahoo, the red-faced cartoon with a big-toothed grin and feather headband won’t disappear from merchandise. The mascot has been a part of the team since 1947. Those who support the mascot say they’re disappointed Cleveland has bowed to political correctness.

NFL – Chiefs agree to trade Smith to Redskins
Two people with direct knowledge of the trade say the Kansas City Chiefs have agreed to deal quarterback Alex Smith to the Washington Redskins. The people spoke to The Associated Press on Tuesday night on condition of anonymity because the move can’t be completed until the start of the new league year in March. One person tells the AP the Redskins have agreed to a four-year extension with Smith, who had one year left on his contract. Smith, who turns 34 in May, spent the past five seasons with the Chiefs, leading them to the playoffs four times while throwing for 102 touchdowns and 33 interceptions. He carries a $17 million salary-cap hit for 2018. The trade spells the end of Kirk Cousins’ tumultuous tenure with the Redskins after back-to-back seasons on the franchise tag.
