Charles Matthews scored 14 points, and No. 24 Michigan outlasted Northwestern 58-47 on Monday night. The Wolverines (18-6, 7-4 Big Ten) labored through an ugly first half but still led 21-19 after 20 minutes. They ended up shooting just 42 percent from the field and 7 of 25 from 3-point range, but Northwestern (13-10, 4-6) couldn’t take advantage. Scottie Lindsey scored 15 points for the Wildcats, but no other Northwestern player had more than nine.  Moe Wagner, Jordan Poole and Duncan Robinson finished with eight points each. Gibbs scored 22 points and John Mooney added 14 with a career-high four 3-pointers for the injury-riddled Fighting Irish (13-9, 3-6), who have lost six straight.

NBA – Pistons acquire Griffin from Clippers in blockbuster deal
The Detroit Pistons have acquired star forward Blake Griffin in a trade with the Los Angeles Clippers. The Pistons announced the deal early Tuesday morning. Detroit is sending forward Tobias Harris, guard Avery Bradley and center Boban Marjanovic to Los Angeles, with the Clippers also receiving draft picks. Detroit also receives forward Brice Johnson and center Willie Reed. Griffin is averaging 22.6 points, 7.9 rebounds and 5.4 assists in 33 games this season, but the Clippers have been plagued by injuries and are ninth in the Western Conference standings. Detroit is struggling as well. The Pistons have lost eight straight heading into Tuesday night’s game against Cleveland.

NFL – Super Bowl LII – Patriots, Eagles tackle the serious and silly at media night
Super Bowl festivities in Minnesota are in full swing, with the New England Patriots and Philadelphia Eagles kicking off their week in the spotlight at media night. The Patriots were first on the stage on Monday night at Xcel Energy Center, the hockey rink and home of the NHL’s Minnesota Wild. Tom Brady led his team out of the tunnel made out of the set designed to resemble a giant glacier in honor of the host state’s wintry climate. Swarmed by a 12-deep pack of reporters, camera operators and just-for-fun “journalists,” Brady wore a black wool stocking cap and a wide smile through most of his hour-long session in advance of his eighth career Super Bowl.

MLB – Indians removing Chief Wahoo logo from uniforms
The Cleveland Indians announced Monday they are dropping the Chief Wahoo logo from their uniforms next year, bowing to decades of complaints that the grinning, red-faced caricature used in one version or another since 1947 is racist. The cartoonish image of a big-toothed American Indian with a scarlet face and a single feather in his headdress will come off the team’s jersey sleeves and caps starting with the 2019 season.

MSU – Magic Johnson speaks out on Twitter amid Michigan St fallout
NBA Hall of Famer Magic Johnson says anyone at Michigan State who was aware of sexual assault and didn’t say or do anything should be fired. Johnson, who led the Spartans to an NCAA title in 1979, also says on Twitter that he loves Michigan State and wants to be part of the solution.  President Lou Anna Simon and athletic director Mark Hollis stepped down last week after campus sports doctor Larry Nassar was sentenced to decades in prison for sexually assaulting athletes. The school’s basketball and football programs have fallen under scrutiny for various allegations.

MSU – House passes bill stemming from reports of abused athletes
The House has followed up on the sex abuse scandal involving sports doctor Larry Nassar by passing legislation that requires governing bodies for amateur athletics to promptly report abuse claims to law enforcement. Nassar was sentenced last week to up to 175 years in prison for sexually abusing more than 150 women and girls over 25 years.  The bill passed the House by a vote of 406-3.

MSU – MSU under microscope
Michigan Attorney General Bill Schuette is asking Michigan State University for emails and text messages related to Nassar, who had served as a doctor in the athletic department. Schuette and his special independent counsel has requested the communications of 20 current and former school officials, including the entire eight-member governing board of trustees, President Lou Anna Simon and athletic director Mark Hollis.  Also being sought by Feb. 9 are records related to recently-retired gymnastics coach Kathie Klages, former Spartans sports medicine doctor Brooke Lemmen and William Strampel, the former dean of the College of Osteopathic Medicine.

MLS – At long last: Beckham’s MLS team in Miami is born
David Beckham finally has his Major League Soccer team in Miami. Beckham and MLS announced Monday that the long-awaited franchise is now born. It took Beckham nearly four years to bring the team to Miami. The Miami area had an MLS team from 1998 through 2001. It folded because of poor attendance. MLS Commissioner Don Garber says “great things come to those that wait.” He says Miami fans have been emailing him for 10 years with hopes of MLS coming back to South Florida. It has been a long road just to get to this point. In the beginning of his Beckham-Miami plan, some people involved in the talks predicted that the team would begin play in 2017.

Golf – Day beats Noren on 6th playoff hole to win Farmers
Jason Day sank an 18-inch birdie putt on the sixth playoff hole to beat Alex Noren and win the Farmers Insurance Open on Monday in front of empty grandstands on No. 18 at Torrey Pines. Day and Noren had to return after grinding through five playoff holes Sunday before it got too dark to continue. Spectators weren’t allowed in because organizers said they didn’t have time to arrange for security.
