Job one for Governor Rick Snyder is producing talent in the state. Consumers Energy CEO Patty Poppe attended Snyder’s State of the State address on Tuesday and supports the initiative. She spoke with Michigan News Network about it.

“It is getting harder and harder to find people who see the value in getting a technical skill in a trade versus going to college,” Poppe said. “Now, many of our people also go to college and so I’m not saying college isn’t important, but I think what the governor highlighted is the promotion of professional trades as a legitimate, wonderful career alternative.”

Poppe says it’s a good sign that Michigan has been importing more people with technical degrees. One of the reasons Detroit didn’t make the finals for a second Amazon headquarters is a lack of talent.
