(6) Michigan State 87, Illinois 74 – Bridges, No. 6 MSU hold off Illinois 87-74
Miles Bridges scored 31 points, Jaren Jackson Jr. had 21 points and 11 rebounds and No. 6 Michigan State got a harder-than-expected 87-74 win over Illinois on Monday night. Michigan State (18-3, 6-2 Big Ten) shot 68.2 percent, which set a record at State Farm Center for an opponent’s shooting percentage. Illinois shot 43.1 percent.  Kipper Nichols led Illinois (10-11, 0-8) with a career-high 27 points. Trent Frazier and Leron Black added 13 and 12, respectively.  Michigan State turned the ball over 25 times. It was the third straight game in which the Spartans gave it away more than 20 times and still won by double digits.  Michigan State out-rebounded Illinois 37-15. The Illini didn’t record their first rebound until nearly 10 minutes into the game.

Tonight
Toledo at Western Michigan, 7:00 p.m.
Miami (OH) at Central Michigan, 7:00 p.m.

NCAAMBB – Villanova maintains its hold on No. 1 in the AP Top 25,
while another bunch of Wildcats found themselves sliding out of the college basketball rankings for the first time in nearly four years. Kentucky slid out of the poll from No. 18 after losses to South Carolina and Florida. The top three of Villanova, Virginia and Purdue remained the same. Michigan State is 6th, Michigan drops to 25th.

NCAAWBB – Women’s College Basketball
Tonight
Michigan State at (16) Michigan, 7:00 p.m.

NCAAWBB – UConn still number 1
TCU is back in the AP Top 25 women’s college basketball poll for the first time in more than seven years. The Horned Frogs came into the poll today at No. 24. UConn remains the unanimous No. 1 choice in the poll from the 32-member national media panel. The Huskies had a busy week with a 4-point win over Texas, a lackluster victory over Tulsa and a rout of Temple.  Notre Dame is 5th, Michigan is 16th.

NFL – Giants hire Shurmur
Pat Shurmur is the new head coach of the New York Giants after two seasons as the Minnesota Vikings’ offensive coordinator. He inherits a team that went 3-13 under Ben McAdoo and interim coach Steve Spagnuolo last season, one year after making the playoffs. Shurmur returns to the head coaching ranks for the first time since leading the Cleveland Browns in 2011-12.

NFL – Cards pick Wilks
Steve Wilks has agreed to a four-year deal to serve as the Arizona Cardinals’ head coach, a contract that includes a fifth-year option.  Wilks served as the Panthers’ defensive coordinator this season after five years as the team’s secondary coach. He replaces Bruce Arians, who retired after five seasons and a franchise-record 50 victories.

NHL – National Hockey League
Last Night
Detroit Red Wings 3, New Jersey Devils 0
Tampa Bay Lightning 2, Chicago Blackhawks 0

Red Wings 3, Devils 0 – Mrazek makes 37 saves, Red Wings blank Devils 3-0
Petr Mrazek had 37 saves in posting his second straight shutout and third of the season as the Detroit Red Wings beat the slumping New Jersey Devils 3-0 on Monday night. Tyler Bertuzzi, David Booth and Dylan Larkin scored for the Red Wings, who snapped a two-game losing streak and won for the second time in six games. Cory Schneider, sidelined two of the last three games with an illness, made 27 saves for the Devils, who have two wins in their last 10 games (2-5-3).

Lightning 2, Blackhawks 0 – Vasilevskiy leads Lightning past Blackhawks 2-0
Andrei Vasilevskiy made 40 saves in his NHL-best seventh shutout, Chris Kunitz scored a short-handed goal in the second period and the Tampa Bay Lightning beat the Chicago Blackhawks 2-0 on Monday night.  Yanni Gourde also scored as Tampa Bay stopped a season-high three-game slide and leapfrogged idle Vegas for the best record in the NHL. The Lightning, who lost to Chicago in the 2015 Stanley Cup Final, improved to 11-0-2 against the Blackhawks in their last 13 regular-season meetings. Jeff Glass made 29 saves, but last-place Chicago (22-19-6) lost for the fourth time in five games.

Last Night

NBA – National Basketball Association
Last Night
New Orleans Pelicans 132, Bulls 128 – 2 OT

Pelicans 132, Bulls 128 – 2 OT – Cousins’ historic triple-double lifts Pelicans over Bulls
DeMarcus Cousins had 44 points, 24 rebounds and 10 assists, Anthony Davis scored 34 points, and the All-Star pair led a 17-point New Orleans comeback in the final five minutes of regulation before the Pelicans pulled out a 132-128 victory over the Chicago Bulls in double overtime Monday night.  Cousins scored seven points in the second overtime on a 3-pointer, a turnaround jumper and two free throws with 8.2 seconds left. He became the first NBA player since Hall of Famer Kareem Abdul-Jabbar in 1972 to have as many as 40 points, 20 rebounds and 10 assists in a game, according to the Elias Sports Bureau. E’Twaun Moore scored 15 points, including a 3 in the second overtime to help the Pelicans win for the fifth time in six games.   Jerian Grant had 22 points and 13 assists, and Robin Lopez also scored 22 for the Bulls, who appeared well on their way to their fifth victory in six games when they opened the 4th quarter with a 23-5 run to take their largest lead at 104-86.

NBA – Bucks axe Kidd
The Milwaukee Bucks have fired head coach Jason Kidd after three seasons and replaced him with assistant Joe Prunty for last night’s game against Phoenix. General manager Jon Horst says a fresh approach and a change in leadership are needed after the Bucks dropped four of their last five games to fall to 23-22 and into eighth place in the NBA’s Eastern Conference. Milwaukee made the playoffs in each of their first two years under Jason Kidd as Giannis Antetokounmpo (YAH’-nihs an-the-toh-KOOM’-poh) turned into an All-Star under his watch.

NCAAFB – Treadwell returning to Michigan State staff
Former Michigan State offensive coordinator Don Treadwell is returning to the Spartans’ staff.  The school announced Monday that Treadwell will help coach defensive backs and special teams while also serving as an offensive consultant. He’ll also be the team’s freshman head coach _ a new role created to support the growth and development of first-year players. Treadwell was Michigan State’s offensive coordinator from 2007-10, and he took over the team when coach Mark Dantonio missed time early in the 2010 season following a heart attack. Treadwell left after that season to become the head coach at Miami of Ohio. Treadwell was at Miami for three seasons, and for the past four seasons, he’s been an assistant at Kent State.

MLB – AP source: Cubs having active talks with RHP Yu Darvish
A person with direct knowledge of the discussions says the Chicago Cubs are having active talks with free-agent pitcher Yu Darvish. The 31-year-old Darvish is one of the top remaining players available in a slow-moving market this winter. He finished last season with the Los Angeles Dodgers, helping them reach the World Series. The person spoke to The Associated Press on condition of anonymity Monday night because there was no agreement in place. The Texas Rangers, Milwaukee Brewers, Minnesota Twins and New York Yankees also have expressed interest in signing the Japanese pitcher. Darvish was 10-12 with a 3.86 ERA in 31 starts for the Rangers and Dodgers last year. The right-hander went 2-2 with a 6.14 ERA in four postseason starts, including a victory over the Cubs in Game 3 of the NL Championship Series at Wrigley Field. The talks with Darvish come amid reports the Cubs have agreed to a minor league deal with Chris Gimenez, who regularly caught Darvish while they were in Texas and developed a trusted working relationship with the pitcher.
