Nebraska 72, (23) Michigan 52 – Palmer scores 19, leads Huskers in 72-52 rout of Michigan
James Palmer Jr. scored 19 points, Isaiah Roby had a career-high 14 and Nebraska beat No. 23 Michigan 72-52 on Thursday night for its first win over the Wolverines since joining the Big Ten. Nebraska (14-7, 5-3), which needed Palmer’s 3-pointer to beat last-place Illinois 64-63 on Monday, led 32-21 at the half and never let Michigan get closer than 10 points in the last 17 minutes. Michigan (16-5, 5-3), which had won nine of its last 10, suffered its most lopsided loss of the season and had a season-low for points. Charles Matthews had 15 points for the Wolverines, who shot 37.5 percent from the floor and a season-low 22.2 percent (4 of 18) on 3-pointers. The Wolverines had come in 8-0 against the Huskers since Nebraska joined the Big Ten in 2011-12, and they had won 10 straight in the series.

Damian Lillard scored 26 points and eight assists, Jusuf Nurkic had 19 points and a season-high 17 rebounds, and the Portland Trail Blazers won their fifth consecutive home game, beating the Indiana Pacers 100-86 on Thursday night. C.J. McCollum added 16 points and Shabazz Napier 13 for Portland, which seems to have its homecourt mojo back, winning five straight after dropping six consecutive home games in early December. The Blazers also beat Indiana for the ninth consecutive time on their home floor.  Victor Oladipo and Darren Collison scored 23 points each for Indiana.

NBA – LeBron, Steph are All-Star captains
LeBron James and Stephen Curry will go head-to-head again, this time as captains who pick teams for the revamped NBA All-Star Game. James and Curry led their respective conferences in the fan voting and will draft from a pool of the rest of the NBA’s best for next month’s game in Los Angeles. The format was changed from the traditional East vs. West matchup for the first time after back-to-back lackluster games in which neither team displayed much interest in defense.

NBA – Bulls Dunn out with concussion
Bulls guard Kris Dunn is out indefinitely after being placed into the NBA’s concussion protocol following a fall during Wednesday’s game against Golden State. Dunn fell awkwardly after a slam dunk, leaving him with two dislocated front teeth. The team says the teeth have been splinted with braces.

Last Night
(5) Notre Dame 84, (6) Tennessee 70

(5) Notre Dame 84, (6) Tennessee 70 – Ogunbowale’s 27 points lead No. 5 Irish over No. 6 Lady Vols
Arike Ogunbowale scored 27 points, and No. 5 Notre Dame completed its largest-ever comeback to beat No. 6 Tennessee 84-70 on Thursday night. The Irish (17-2) trailed by 23 points early in the second quarter but rallied with an aggressive defense that forced 28 Tennessee turnovers, 15 in the second half. The previous biggest deficit that the Irish had overcome in a victory was an 18-point hole against Duke in the Junkaroo Jam on Nov. 26, 2011. A 12-0 run by the Irish coincided with a nearly three-minute scoreless skid by Tennessee (16-2) to give Notre Dame a 70-65 lead with 4:12 to play that it would not relinquish. Marina Mabrey finished with 20 points, Jackie Young scored 18 and Jessica Shepard had 12 for Notre Dame.

Saturday
Eastern Michigan at Northern Illinois, 2:00 p.m.
Central Michigan at Akron, 2:00 p.m.

MLB – Slow progress on pace of play
Major League players apparently aren’t very interested in speeding up baseball’s pace of play. A person familiar with the decision tells The Associated Press the players’ association has rejected Major League Baseball’s proposal to institute 20-second pitch clocks and limits on mound visits. The person says union head Tony Clark and deputy general counsel Matt Nussbaum informed MLB of the decision Thursday during a telephone call to deputy commissioner Dan Halem.  Under baseball’s labor contract, management can change on-field rules on its own with one season of advance notice. MLB does not intend to make any decision before its next owners’ meetings begins on Jan. 30.  Club owners and executives have grown concerned about pace of play. Nine-inning games averaged a record 3 hours, 5 minutes during the 2017 regular season and 3:29 during the postseason.

Tennis – A scorcher at Melbourne
Australian Open officials are monitoring rising temperatures as the tournament continues its third round of singles action.  Officials were criticized on Thursday when play continued after the temperature reached 104 degrees Fahrenheit, and that number is expected to grow during Day 5 action. The tournament has an Extreme Heat Policy which goes into effect when the air temperature exceeds 104 degrees Fahrenheit and the wet-bulb reading is more than 91 degrees. When both occur, matches on outside courts are supposed to be suspended and the roofs closed on all three main stadiums. The Day 5 schedule features third-round matches involving Rafael Nadal, Nick Kyrgios and Caroline Wozniacki.

NCAA – Emmert expects to see quick changes in college basketball
NCAA President Mark Emmert says the governing body must act on a set of recommendations to clean up college basketball before the start of next season. The comments come as an FBI investigation continues into alleged corruption in college basketball. The focus has been on arrangements made between assistant coaches, shoe companies and financial advisers. He expects to receive the report from an independent commission by April 25. The Board of Governors will then be expected to vote on formal proposals at their August meeting. Those approved would likely take effect before the Nov. 6 season openers.

NCAA – NCAA hopes to vote on transfer rule changes in April
The NCAA’s Board of Governors has voted to allow new transfer rule proposals to be made in April and possibly voted on in June. Usually, proposals must be introduced by Sept. 1 to be considered for a final vote in April. But on the second day of the governing body’s annual convention, the board agreed to make this year’s legislative cycle more flexible, giving schools more time to comment on any potential changes. The Division I Council has spent months trying to come up with new rules. It introduced legislation last year that would implement tougher penalties for tampering and another measure that would eliminate restrictions by schools and coaches about where a transfer could go.

Olympics – Russians to get ‘neutral’ gray, red uniforms for Olympics
The Olympic Athletes from Russia will be wearing gray and red in Pyeongchang. Under an International Olympic Committee ruling last month that formally banned the Russia team, as many as 200 Russians could end up competing under the Olympic flag next month. Russian sportswear company Zasport published on Thursday sketches of what it says are IOC-approved designs for the competitors, who will be officially known as Olympic Athletes from Russia. There are winter coats, tracksuits, and hooded sweaters in gray, as well as an outfit in red with white stripes. The designs, from the same company which was due to create uniforms for the Russian team before the ban, don’t bear any Russian flags.  IOC rules don’t allow the neutral uniforms to contain national symbols, so there’s a badge on the chest reading “Olympic Athletes from Russia.” Zasport says Russian athletes will start receiving their uniforms on Monday. However, it’s far from clear who exactly is going to the Olympics from Russia. The IOC has an invitation-only process for Russian athletes with the aim of cutting out those who it believes were part of organized doping programs or cover-ups at the 2014 Winter Olympics in Sochi. It wasn’t immediately clear which versions of the uniforms would be worn at the opening ceremony and the IOC did not immediately comment.
